Our brown Labrador is named Bilbo, it's well past time for a tribute beer. What could be more fitting than a British Brown Ale? I want the fruity/raisin-y taste from Special B, thus the name Bilbo Special.
This batch:
Infusion mash got a bit too hot, ended up with 67 C for 60 min.
FG seems to stall at 1.020, resulting in ABV 4.2 (~4.4 - 4.5 with bottle conditioning). End result will probably be somewhere between a modern British Brown Ale and a London Brown Ale; a sweet and somewhat fruity British Brown Ale. Not bad, but not adhering to a specific style. |

Notes: Toasting your oats can improve the nutty, bready flavor of your beer: Set your oven to 350F and spread your oats onto a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil. Stir every 5 min until golden.
Additionally, to get more fermentability, you may choose to steep your oats longer than 30 min. Maintain that 155F for 45min to an hour for best results.

Notes: After 4-5 days of fermentation add three ounces of dark rum mixed with 4-5 packs of Starbucks instant coffee directly to fermentor.
Starbucks instant coffee is actually pretty decent on it's own. Don't substitute for a different brand unless you've tried it. I haven't found any that are equal. |
