*self review can be a bit Trumpian (Narcissistic!), its hard not to like your own. Most brews I make are ok but honestly not world beaters, this is one of the best I've done

Successful beer day the only issue was a crack in the Erlenmeyer flask :(

I measured out of interest and from 4L of sparge water I actually extracted 5L of fermentable wort. This is quite good.

7.11.18 I shook it in the morning to get some activity restarted.
11.11.18 Racked to secondary with Christian. An incredible amount of trub at the bottom! Really astounding. Taste is a subtle spice and pumpkin on the aftertaste; nothing too strong.

Notes: 1. Steep grain in 1.5 gallons of water by heating slowly to 155, then shut off the heat steep for 30 minutes.
2. Remove grain from wort.
3. Add the fermentables along with 1/2 the Fuggles & 1/2 the golden hops and continue boil for another 30 minutes.
4. Add Irish Moss continue Rolling boil for 15minutes.
5. Add 1/2 the Fuggles & 1/2 the golden hops and continue boil for another 15 minutes.
6. Add Irish Moss and continue boil for another 15 minutes.
7. Cool the wort down as quickly as possible (I placed the pan (with lid on) in the sink, filled around the pan with ice and cold tap water. Being careful not to allow the ice or water to touch the lid, don't want to contaminate it now).
8. Pitch the yeast in 1/2 cup water & a couple tablespoons of corn sugar just to make sure its going to work. (I used Karo Syrup, didn't' t have dry corn sugar handy)
9. Pour wort into fermenter, use a strainer if you have one to catch the hops.
10. Fill with water (total wort plus water = 5 gallons)
11. Now is the time to get a sample to measure.
12. Pitch the yeast into the fermentor and stir vigorously for a minute or so to infuse with oxygen.
*Step 4 was a mistake. Shouldn't have done it. |

Notes: The goal for this brew is to create a copycat Elvis Juice (Brewdog, Ellon, Scotland, UK), or at the very least, a medium ABV American IPA with heavy citrus notes, both in flavor and aroma. We will follow the Elvis Juice recipe from DIY Dog as close as we can but we’ll leave out the fruit/peel additions (to highlight the hop flavors/aromas on their own) and do partial mash instead of full grain because we don’t have a large enough mashing vessel. The switch to partial mash means that some of the grain in the original recipe will be replaced with a light malt extract. Assuming the malt extract is part of the base malts (Pale 2-row), we will use the same mass percentage of caramalt as the DIY dog recipe calls for (~16%). Hop schedule will be about the same as DIY dog - though they don't provide a fermentation timeline, we'll wait for fermentation to subside before dry hopping for 5 days. We'll also use Fermentis US-05 yeast instead of the WYeast 1056 (they're the same strain, 05 is just dry version), and directly pitch the yeast from the pack into the carboy, no starter. |
