Notes: Fermentation 66F for 14 days
Fermentation was clean, slight astringency from roast barley. Would likely add a full pound of lactose next time. Reduce black patent and roast barley by a percent each. Likely 2 percent for Black patent. Beer aged with a slight ashy taste. And aim for a lower IBU of ~25.
When second version is made, it will be updated. |

10/21/22
rebrewing this for cashmere, turning down the gravity, doing a half RO solution plus minerals...should be good. need to check on yeast, this may get brewed on kviek and in a bucket
==============================
9/14/2022
beer came out great, belma hops are delicious. the FG was down to 1005 making the abv on the high side and the body kind of thin and even the color is pretty light. next time for pale ale, should add some crystal malt to give a little more depth in color and body. also consider mashing higher or not as long and maybe do mashout. i think current mash is creating sugars that are a little too fermentable?
==============================
9/1/2022
brew night last night. the BIAB went well, no sparge. the volume came out exactly as BF predicted, although it boiled down from 6.5 to under 5 gallons in an hour, so need to account for that next time. it was orignally 1070 OG, topped up to 5 gallons for 1060, then topped up more to about 5.5 or maybe 5.66 for 1055. (did not want to end up at 1060, too strong for this beer and would require more hops for balance, at that point making it an ipa)
decided on a whim to add a little more bittering hops to end up at the upper range of IBU. my lighter beers using tap water in general come out on the sweet side but most times that is without water adjustments.
last minute decided to switch to us05 instead of voss
==============================
8/31/2022
starting up another pale. the last one i vaguely remember coming out bad, cant remember why though. maybe somethign to do with yeast, not sure. but the base recipe is fine...
the water adjustments are as good as its gonna get on tap water. this beer would probably be much better with RO water and more precise adjustments...
changing for belma hops this time and adjusting efficiency for GF, i think i will do a true BIAB style mash today. so adding a little more to malt bill just in case
==============================
3/14/2022
repurposing for huell melon pale ale. with updated water profile results from ward, my water profile for this beer now looks a bit out of wack by the numbers but it worked well for the last beer so im just going to roll with it for now until i have time to figure out how to fix it.
==============================
2/8/2022
This lutra is taking forever. Tonight its 10 brix which is like 1026 and 4.6%. Tastes sweet. Still bubbling smh
==============================
2/3/2022
measured 1060 OG i think i got more than 5.5 gallons. i accidentally grained into my entire volume of hot liquor. after mash i sparged a little with about 1.5 or 2 gallons of cold water. pre boil vol was like 8.5 gallons
==============================
2/1/2022
revamping summer madness for this beer which will feature mighty axe julius hops instead of cascade. going with lutra again.
==============================
9/13/2021
last week measured 1013 FG for 4.8%abv. but it does not taste that light. nice body and carapils flavor, also the dry hop was faint but nice. could maybe use more dry hop but in the interest of keeping it light and cheap and not-session-ipa, i think its perfect just like this.
==============================
9/1/2021 - brew day
Not too confident on 70% eff dropping to 60, bumping 2row from 975 to 1150. Should do better with water but i think I'm gonna use tap and leave out acid
==============================
7/22/2021
Just had Port City Essential Pale Ale recently which has to be the tastiest pale ale on the planet...at very least it is one of my absolute favorite beers. this time it strikes me that it has a lot of not bitter hop flavor and decent backbone while still being 5.5%.
Their website says 35ibu so im knocking down the warrior contribution from 0.75 to 0.4oz. Adding more cascade in the flameout and dry hop (1oz-->2oz)
consider going 3oz in dry hop. maybe some pilsner malt or something else to add more malt backbone. vienna? but the carapils might be fine. at least to start.
need to review water. would like to use tap and adjust but unsure rn, been having off mash pH readings and low efficiency.

Notes: MASH
Water Volume: 4.4 gallons for 1.2lb/qt ratio.
Prior to heating HLT, check pH of tap water + add Salts/LA to achieve Goal water.
LA: 1mL
pH: ______
STRIKE WATER: 164F.
Add Grains @ 162F.
Allow Temperature to fall to 152/153F prior to closing lid.
Total Mash Time: 60 minutes
FINAL MASH TEMP: ____F
FINAL MASH pH: ____
Add 5L of Boiling Water at the end of Mash and stir into solution
Begin Vorlauf!
SPARGE
Heat 7gal of Water to 177F. Add to Sparge Vessel.
Recirculate 4 times (or until clear running's) prior to collecting wort.
Attempt to Sparge over ~20 minutes, collect 8 gal into boil kettle.
BOIL
Check Pre-Boil Gravity (goal: 1.046) + pH
NOTE: Make sure to adjust for TEMPERATURE
PRE-BOIL GRAVITY: ____ @ ____F
PRE-BOIL pH: ____
Adjust Pre-Boil pH to: ~5.4 (+/- 0.1)
Final pH measurement: ____
Lactic Acid addition: ____ mL
Boil for 90 minutes (goal OG: 1.059)
Add Bittering Hops @ 60 min.
Add Centennial/Cascade @ 15 + 5 minutes.
Add 1/2 crushed Whirlfloc tablet @ 5 minutes.
Begin Whirlpool after flameout, add "whirlpool" addition once wort is cooled to 180F.
Chill wort rapidly to ~70F thereafter.
Once temperature is ~70F: place lid on kettle, and allow immersion chiller to rest in wort for another ~5 minutes (to help settle particles in suspension).
Drain wort from Kettle into Mash Cooler with Hop Cylinder + fine mesh bag attached (at the end of auto-siphon)
Gravity feed 5.25gal ("F" Mark) of wort from Mash Cooler into Catalyst Fermenter
Allow Ranco/Chest Freezer to adjust wort temperature to goal starting temp (cool to 67F).
ORIGINAL GRAVITY: ______ (goal: 1.059)
FERMENTATION
Goal Starting Temp: 67F
O2: 1 minute
