Notes: Start with 7.5 gal of water.
Heat to 160 or so. Add the bag and clip to rim of keg.
slowly stir in all the grain. Check temp.
Ideally temp will be 154. Heat or cool to get close. add first hops.
Cover and wrap with blanket or insulation to hold the temp for 1 hour
Monitor temps throughout MASH. maintain 154
Remove insulation and lid. stir well. Slowly lift bag with winch. (may need to wrap the bag several times around the carabiner. SQUUUEEEEZE
Measure preboil Gravity and temp ______ _________
Bring wort to boil, monitor for boil overs and excessive foam
Follow hop schedule
add irish moss and coil at 15 from end
cool to 65-70
Measure post boil SG, temp, and volume
add water if necessary to 5.5 gal
transfer to fermenter (aerate as transferring)
pitch yeast
add air lock

Notes: The Tree House recipe in the YouTube description has 14.5 lbs of grain, which would produce over 7% alcohol, too much for my blood. So I lowered the grain bill to 11.5 lbs, which should yield 6.1% ABV, and should be plenty. I kept most of the percentages from the original recipe, except for the dark grains, which I lowered to 3.1% each. I’m afraid if I keep it at 3.5%, this will be too stringent. We shall see. If I don’t get the deep coffee and chocolate notes, I’ll raise it back to 3.5%. Lastly, I added 1/4 lbs of flaked barley to give the beer some head retention. |
