Very refreshing. I used 20oz of grapefruit juice and dry hopped with only .5oz of citra,cascade and mosaic. Will brew again for sure!!!

I am slightly confused with when to add the dry hops. I just brewed this yesterday. It is in the primary fermenter. Do I add the Dry Hops in the Primary fermenter 5 days before I keg it? In the secondary fermenter 5 days before I keg it? I am not sure how to read the recipe and have never dry hopped before.

Looking forward to tasting it!

I dry hop always in the secondary fermenter. Then I chill it for a day before I add the grapefruit juice so that the yeast doesn't dissipate the flavor, then I keg it. Hope this helps

Just finished brewing and into the fermenter it goes. Numbers were spot on! Bill, how come you put grapefruit juice in? Did it lack grapefruit aroma?

Tony, the citrus from the juice gives it a more pronounced flavor and aroma, and will dissipate as the beer sits in the keg. It does not overpower the beer. I add it to the keg so the yeast will not start fermenting again due to the sugars in the juice. I use 4 ruby red grapefruits peel brewing and the juice 2 to 4 in the keg.

Great recipe Bill. Just brewed it last weekend and racked to secondary today. Just curious if you needed to boil the juice before adding it. I am juicing some of my own grapefruit and was wondering if i should boil to "sanitize" the juice. Thanks for sharing the recipe

Brian....Add the Juice to your keg and no need to boil it because the beer is completely fermented and chilled there is a very low chance of any infection. Additionally, if you boil the juice you will lose both the aroma and flavor you are looking for. As it is as the beer sits in the keg the grapefruit flavor will diminish over time. Let me know how you like it once it's tapped. Enjoy!!!

Hey Blind Bill, this recipe sounds awesome. How can I add the grapefruit juice if I want to bottle this? Since I would need to carbonate with sugar and keep bottles in warm for sometime. I guess it is not possible? Just thinking that what if I would add actual grapefruit meat and peel to the secondary? The actual fruit does not contain as much sugar as concentrated juice.

That might work but I would reduce your sugar added during bottling to minimize the chance of exploding bottles due to over-carbonation. I honestly have never tried it because I always keg. Good luck, and by the way even without the grapefruit juice it's a great IPA!!! Hope you enjoy it if you give it a try.

Looks great. I am quite new to all grain brewing. Do I also need to add dextrose to the fermenter alongside the fermentable produced in the mash, as you might with brewing from malt extract cans?

John unless you want a higher alcohol content you don't need to add dextrose to this recipe. With all grain recipes the sugar comes from the mashed grains adding some dextrose will cause your beer gravity to finish lower and give it a lighter taster while boosting the alcohol level. Typically I use dry malt extract for boosting the alcohol level but it will maintain the same mouthfeel. Hope this helps

Does the boil time mean you added the hops 15 min into the boil or boiled the hops for 15 minutes? Thanks

Hi Bill, just brewed this one today and I am very much looking forward to tasting it! One question that came up during the brew was - what was I supposed to do with the grapefruit peel after the boil? Was I supposed to add it to the fermenter? I was going to do that, but I had put them to the side after the boil and forgot to pitch them in the wort. Anyway, thanks for the recipe!
