Brewhouse note....
Need to explore ways to help make the brew day cleanup easier, if possible.
Today, ran into issues cleaning due to the sheer amount of hop gack. The initial boilover didn't help since I had to due a full top-to-bottom cleanup of the MT and BK that got splashed by the boilover.
Right now, for a brew day like today, even if it went well I think the major slowdowns are due to how to cleanout the MT and subsequently, the BK.
I would like to explore grain baskets or bags for the MT for easier post sparging/pre-boil cleanup. If there was a way to drop a basket or bag in there without affecting the overall mash efficiency or recirculation flow then I think that would go a long way to simplifying cleanup. Scooping out with a metal bowl currently kind of sucks, not to mention it's not fun to pour wet grains into the bin sitting there attracting bugs until waste pickup shows up.
For the BK, honestly, not sure if it can get any better then it is. Realistically, so long as a sufficient number of hops are used, there's going to be a large trub afterward, and you can't really effectively clean that by running through the hoses without going through a lot of water. The XPA has always been a problem in this regard, but even so, there must be better ways to do this? Today ran into pretty significant flow issues due to hop particulate getting stuck in the flow meter, so my whirlpool got paused for at least a few minutes without me noticing.
I'm already collecting hot waste water from the CFC into the HLT for post-brew cleanup of the hoses/pumps/valves/etc. so I feel solid in that regard. I think it really is just a matter of finding a better way to cleanup the MT and BK. |

Flushed with CO2, added dry hopper attachment as quickly as possible since I forgot to do so before. Still plenty of CO2 offgasing right now so not too worried but wanted to be prepared for the second dry hopping when oxygenation will be much more of a worry. |

Temp increased to 21C to help foster better environment for eating through any hop creep.
CO2 pressure reached .4 bar (spunding) so definitely activity still. Will let ride for 3-5 days before soft crashing and dumping before second dry hop. |

NOTES:
I know that I boiled a bit too long and likely concentrated it a bit leading to a higher OG, but I was surprised by the rather significant drop in FG by the end of this thing. It caught me off guard at the speed that it fermented, it reached 1.008 so quick that I didn't manage to do first dry hop until primary ferm was basically done. Only an extra gravity point drop after that point.
Was originally thinking that maybe hop creep led to the much lower FG but then realized it had hit 1.008 before I even hopped so wtf? |
