Notes
  • Brewed on 9/19/20
  • Mash water = 6.49 gallons (24.6 liters)
  • Sparge water = 2.16 gallons (8.2 liters)
  • Expecting pre-boil volume of 6.6 gallons (25 liters) or 6.86 gallons (25.9 liters) after 4% wort expansion, actually had 26.5 liters or 7.0 gallons (could have been more too but I pulled the grain basket). Should be ~7.1 after DME addition. Was closer to 7.3.
  • Expecting mash efficiency of 84% (expanded wort with Grainfather, same with Brewer's Friend this time) which implies a pre boil gravity of 1.074, then adding [2 lb 1.6 oz] of DME to get pre-boil gravity to 1.091. I want to maintain a 1.35 quarts per pound water to grist ratio in grainfather so need to limit malt bill to 16.5 pounds. Actually only had 75% mash efficiency and hit 1.065 pre boil gravity, then added 3 pounds of DME to get to 1.081. Also extended boil to 120 minutes to try and hit target OG target. Was able to hit 1.098.
  • Mash temp settled right it at ~154F
  • Hit 19.6 plato pre boil gravity which converts to 1.081 vs. 1.091 (1.077 + .014) target so ~75% mash efficiency vs. 84% expected.
  • Expecting to boil down to 6.0 gallons so boil-off tool estimates 1.099 OG.
  • After boil had ~6.X gallons (expected 6.0) in the kettle and ~5.5 gallons made it into the fermenter.
  • Pitched the yeast starter and set fermentation chamber at 65F,
  • Packaged on 9/30/20, batch #47, FG was 1.016 (at 69F) which converts to 1.017 so 83% attenuation vs 71% avg. and 73% expected
  • Fill keg to 52.17 pounds = (1.017FG x 8.345 x 5 gallons) + 9.74 (empty keg weight)
