    Cold-crashing a Lager...

In the fermenter is an Oktoberfest. Fermentation is done but, as I consider the cold-crash, I wonder what the range of opinions is regarding the speed of the process. Should it be crashed as fast as possible, or just 5-7 degrees (F) per day, or something else? For my ales, I always crash as...

    Winemakers? When do I...

A winemaking kit is nearly done in its primary fermentation. The instructions say 'once fermentation is done - the SG is below 0.998 - then rack to secondary and add these things to help clarify it.' My tilt says SG is 0.987, but it hasn't hit stable SG yet. Do I wait, or rack it while it...

    Fresh Hops

Several grow their own hops, but you can also buy these commercially. I just got a note from Champlain Valley Hops that they are taking orders for fresh hops (harvest season is a month away!) ate $6.50 a pound. If you've wanted to try fresh hops, here's one way.

    Spammers vs Clueless

The regulars see a LOT if what appears to be spam. Some are obvious - URLs in the posts, unrelated to beer, Trial member, resurrecting way old threads with irrelevant or ambigious or 'vanilla' comments. This, we know. Then there are others. They appear to be moderately relevant, or new posts...

    Happy National (US) Beer Day

90 years ago today April 7), president Roosevelt made beer legal again (this was during prohibition) if it was lower than 4% abv. The resulting boom in brewing, along with everything that supported it (kegs, glasses, bars, delivery trucks...) made a noticeable difference as the USA made its way...

    Cold Crash Timing

I've always cold crashed my ales in the fermenter "as fast as possible", but today I read in Palmer's How To Brew that a lager should be cold crashed no more than 10 degrees a day. Something about keeping the yeast from dying off too quickly. Lager brewers: How fast do you cold crash?

    Where is this coming from?

@Pricelessbrewing @Yooper Any ideas where in my recipe "Ben's Bunyip 2.1 DR" (made public) the highlighted notation is coming from? I was guessing my equipment profile but did not see anything like that. (My equipment is Brewzilla, chill method is counterflow) Thanks in advance, Don

    Spam Reduction Idea

The vast majority of forum spam are attempts to get us to follow a link to somewhere. And spammers only use trial memberships. I suggest removing the ability to post an active hyperlink for all trial members.

How much StarSan is too much?

I mix StarSan at 1 ounce for 5 gallons. In my kegs, the dip tubes are cut 1/2" short. I store my kegs clean and pressurized, with a gallon of StarSan solution in them. I empty the StarSan using a picnic tap, then pressure transfer from the fermenter into the keg. I'd like to hear your opinion...

    Brewing With a Bad Back

Recently I mildly tweaked my back. It's just a muscle thing, but I've had a weak L5 all my life and so need to be careful. For the past 4-5 weeks I've been rebuilding a small retaining wall at my house, lifting 85-pound wall blocks, digging dirt, moving gravel, all without trouble. I lift a...

    Saving yeast

Here is the bottle of glop I saved from my last brew. The yeast is cross my loof Belgian. Does all of this contain yeast, or is it just the thin light layer at the top?
