Understanding what I'm shooting for in the mash

I brew with an HLT, Mash Tun, and boil kettle, but the idea is the same. I mash with a specific mash thickness (liquor-to-grist ratio) in my mash tun, then I fly sparge to my boil kettle. So the wort I end up with after mashing is always less than what I need in the boil kettle. I may have 9...

    Need help reading recipes

As already stated, most of the recipes are based on specific types of hardware. I fly sparge and leave water on the grain when sparging is complete, so my sparge water requirements plus my strike water are always higher than what I end up in my boil. Boil off rate is different between...

Which Quarterly recipe should I brew?

Downtown Charlie was loved by everyone I shared it with. My Uncle C's Brown is still fermenting so I haven't had a chance to taste it yet. My vote would be for Downtown Charlie.

    4th Quarter Brew

Maybe I can get this one brewed in this quarter. Just pitched my yeast on the 3rd quarter beer.

    3rd Quarter Brew

Well, I know the third quarter is in the rear view at this point, but I did manage to get this one brewed today. My OG, 1.056, was a bit low, but a good brew day regardless. Picture is about 3/4 of the way through mashing.

    3rd Quarter Brew

Well, I figure better late than never. After a grueling summer I am finally finding time to start brewing again. Just ordered the grain for the 3rd quarter brew, will be middle of the next quarter before it will be done, but excited to brew something different.

    suckback

I use to run my blow off tube into a bottle of Star San as my air lock. I have had a couple of beers that have sucked star san back into my beer. Didn't really hurt anything, but I do pay a bit more attention to my days now. I have upgraded equipment and now I just add CO2 and keep a slight...

    Heya, folks.

Welcome to the group. Lots of helpful people here with a wide range of experience. One thing not to skimp on is cleaning. Beyond that, you can brew from a stove top and ferment in a bucket pretty cheap. It is addictive and really easy to build from there. Enjoy

    Advice on adding fruit.

I think Mark Farrall provided the best history on secondary. I would agree with the group, moving to a second vessel opens you up to more problems than you really want with very minimum gain. When I started brewing I was fermenting in 5 gallon buckets that I would transfer to a bottling bucket...

Brewer's Friend: Converting to metric and scaling up

Just for a data point for everyone; I bottled my last two lagers after fermentation and diacetyl rest and cold crashed in the bottle. Both came out clean, crisp, and clear. The primary reason for cold crashing in the bottle was to free up my fermenters. I have an Oktoberfest that will get...

How do you start a new brewing session in the software?

Once you have your recipe created, click on Brew, that will create a new brewing session and get you started.

    Decline in Hombrewing.

Funny, that is exactly my thought when I actually get a chance to brew. I could brew a small batch, but why spend the all the time for just a gallon or two when I can just as easily make a 10 gallon batch. Yes, the larger equipment takes a bit longer to clean, but not enough to make a smaller...

Spike Nano- so much boil volume?

I have a few questions to help answer your question. What size batch are you trying to make? Is the target volume set to fermenter or kettle? I brew with a 30 gallon Spike Brewing trio system and it has taken me some time to get all of my information dialed in. For my system, my pre-boil...

    Lager yeast choice

As everyone has already said, 34/70 is a great lager yeast. I just started my diacetyl rest on my Oktoberfest that I used 34/70 yeast on.

    My Dashboard & Brewing Trends

I have attempted to organize my recipes based on where they originated. So I have 22 that I have either ordered as a kit or just copied the grain bill from a kit, I have 5 that I have taken from AHA, another 12 from other places, and 32 snapsots which are some iteration of one of the previously...

    Liquoring Back

Ok, I have to ask even though I think I know the answer. Wouldn't adding water pre-fermentation lower your original gravity. I am assuming you would add water that had been boiled.
