Better Fittings for Mash Tun (round cooler style)?

Thanks for the replies, I sorta figured this is what I'd be limited to. My theory is that despite the manufacturer most of these 10gallon coolers have the same or very similar construction and specs. It seems that there should be a more refined solution for this that would be able to be used on...

Better Fittings for Mash Tun (round cooler style)?

I'm building a new all grain setup using a few of the 10 gallon home depot round coolers. I HATE the flimsy feeling of the bulk head fitting when i'm opening and closing the valve. The flex of the bulk head makes me nervous especially when theres gallons of hot liquid in there. I also seem to...

New To Kegging and Getting All Foam!

Ok so admittedly I have watched the youtube videos on kegging and i feel like i'm doing it right but i'm ending up with ALL foam and by the time it all calms down and i work out a glass it's basically slightly carbed. Anyone want to give me a kegging for dummies bullet point? I'm at a loss here...

    My Yeast Woke Back Up?

    My Yeast Woke Back Up?

So i took a sample from my Pliny clone today and at the same pulled a jar full of trub off the bottom (it's a Catalyst fermenter). Before the sample and trub pull, fermentation was basically at a stand still 1.01 but then after i buttoned it all back up it started bubbling away again?! What gives?

Consistent Mystery Flavor in Extract Brews

So your saying I could potentially do a 60 min boil with just hop additions and in the final 15 add the LME and call it a day?

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

Yeah there's always tech out there to do whatever you want but man the prices are insane. If anything something that could be put into a keg like a french press filter and pushed down to seal off all of the unwanted stuff and then a shortened dip tube. I can't imagine all those parts would be...

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

Yeah no dice on getting a Pliny up here! At least I've never seen one.

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

I mean come on what’s $15 among brewers.... now if someone could develop some kind of FV that could convert magically into a keg that’d be sweet.

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

If anyone out there is near Russian River Brewing or in the SF Bay area and can get a bottle of Pliny I'd be willing to work something out to get one! Never had it and would love ot have it for comparison.

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

Yeah the dry hoping schedule is 5 day addition and then 12 day addition so it'll be in there at least another week or two. I'll probably just give it 4 total then rack off for some bottles and some to a keg. I'm gonna pull a sample tonight to get a reading and then see where i'm at friday.

Consistent Mystery Flavor in Extract Brews

Yeah I did the natural progression of extract brewing, then one brew session with BIAB, and then just went all in on some all-grain equipment. The extract method i didn't like the twang but now that you mention the DME method it might be cool to steer my new brewer friend to that. The BIAB for...

Consistent Mystery Flavor in Extract Brews

When I first started brewing i of course started with extract brews. One of the things i noticed was this consistent flavor that existed from brew to brew. It's hard to describe but I when I moved to all grain the flavor wasn't present in those brews. I recently helped a friend start brewing and...

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

Well considering the hops bill on this Pliny clone i'm gonna let this thing sit for quite awhile before i rack it off. One of the things in the back of my mind is yeast autolysis and some of the off flavors that may come from sitting to long and having that process start. After reading some of...

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

Interesting! What off flavors are produced by the presence of acetaldehyde and diacetyl?

Yeah man I've learned that brewing is like 20% prep 20% addiction and 60% patience.

Why No "Dry Hop Addition" steps?

Seems like there should be a dry hop addition step in the brewing steps. Of course i can do an other log addition but since most brews call for dry hopping why not add it?

When Do You Consider Fermentation Done?

I'm always hesitant to call fermentation done when i'm getting gas bubbles every 15-20 seconds but perhaps most people would consider fermentation done at that point. Other than being abundantly cautious it'd be great to hear from you all what your take on this is. If i could rack it off sooner...

Cone vs. Pellet - Which leads to less trub after boil and how to combat the "gunk"

My past few brew sessions i've used pellets instead of cones. I'm testing the idea that maybe pellets give up more of their AA's during boil than cones simply because there is more surface area of a dissolved pellet being exposed to the boil. What I've noticed is that I have a METRIC TON of trub...
