What network is carrying that (Twilight Zone marathon)? Wonder if CBS picked that up because they lost the SEC contract this year.
Bet it was a productive day at school.
I'm just glad I didn't have to make that decision, but I have to agree that it can't be decided strictly on winning record or historic appearances. Can you claim FSU was a better team than Bama? Who did they beat in their perfect season? Florida? Did they beat Texas? Nope. Georgia? Nope. Anyone that DID beat Georgia, Texas or Bama? Nope. Anyone with a 29-0 record? Nope. If based it strictly on winning record, then that's only fair because of one set of numbers which does not particularly reflect how good the team really is. The rest of the statistics are there to measure the teams, though, and I really want to believe that was part of the deciding factor. It would be completely unfair to ANY team to match them up against monster teams they have little chance of beating. But do I believe that FSU could beat Michigan? Possibly. Washington? Possibly. IIRC, they all had approximately the same depth of season, but NONE was even close to Georgia, Bama, or Texas. In fact, Georgia's depth chart was lower than Bama's, and we beat them. How could anyone argue that Bama didn't deserve one seat? Because Texas beat 'em? But did Texas beat anyone with a 29-0 season? Nope. They beat us with a pretty crappy record (0 wins) after Georgia beat us last year because it was our first game of the season. Not a great start for us, surely. Think they could beat us again? I don't think so, but somehow, I think that's exactly what we're gonna see: a rematch of Texas and Bama.
Next year's bracket will solve some of the decision making, but introduce some new caveats, too. Even with 12 slots, though, there's still more candidates than slots because of the number of conferences. They'll STILL have the selection process which will depend on opinion, not statistics. Should they just use the slots based on team count in each conference? HOW do they fill 12 slots with hundreds of teams competing for them that cannot possibly play enough games in regular season to even begin to make the ranking system based on actual ability? Where the heck did 12 slots come from? Someone's not going to have to play as many games as someone else. Are 4 teams being selected as wildcards to progress to 8 slots? How is that fair in a playoff system? The wildcards have to play one more game than anyone else. One injury in that extra game can make the difference. My cipherin' and gazintas say there's gotta be at least 16 slots for it to be a fair and objective playoff where every team has to win out through 4 games to claim the title.
All this stuff is exactly why I'm not a gambling person.
