I brewed today!

I brewed my first-ever self*-designed all-grain recipe, and of course things went off the rails a bit. Turns out I can't fit 8kg of grain into my 30l brew tank, so I mashed about 5.5kg of the grain I'd already cracked, then steeped the remaining 1.5kg in a pot on the stove. I managed to fit all the resulting liquid into the tank for the boil, so we'll see how things shake out. Ended up with a 1.072 OG in the end, which I am choosing to see as a pretty positive sign of things to come. Wish me luck.

* Ushered into being by you helpful folk, of course.

Get a drill on that grain mill. Life will be easier for milling.

Congratulations! But yeah, I can fit almost 13 pounds (6.5 kg) into my brewzilla 35, but not quite.

An alternative is to mash twice, half, then half again, then put both results in for the boil.

Or use extract to get the higher OG. A pound of DME raises the gravity by about 0.009 in 5 gallons.

@Donoroto, 0.09 seems like a lot, maybe you meant 0.009 instead?

ChatGPT said a pound of DME gives you 45 points (0.45) per gallon, so 5 gallons is just under 0.09. Maybe I’m hallucinating…. @Craigerrr uses DME, whaddaya say sir?
1 lb of DME gives you .009 in 5 gallons
If you are shooting for a 1060 wort, you can now roughly shoot for a 1051 wort and add your 1 lb of dme to get to 1060.
Having said that I have been thinking very seriously about pulling out my cooler mash tun, and my Anvil pump for mashing...

Brewing 2 batches today.

@Megary In looking at your grain bill, there is Dutch on the 2nd line. I'm not familiar with that term, is that a specific grain? I couldn't tell by the crushed grist what it was. Excellent record keeping by the way..

Yes…a specific name. “Dutch” is a 10L Munich style malt from Deer Creek Malthouse. The first 3 on the list are DC malts. I love their stuff.
And thank you! Cheers.

Deer Creek is a maltster from Pennsylvania and I would guess that their “Dutch” Munich malt is paying tribute to the group of people with German ancestry known as the Pennsylvania Dutch, the Amish and Mennonites. Where in history Dutch got bastardized from Deutsch, I cannot say. :D
