I've put my first batches in the garden compost but realized there's a risk that the wild boars in the forest will come to eat them. What do you usually do with your used malt?
Is it good food for birds?

Chickens don't have much use for it but if you pile it up with a handful of dried meal worms, there'll be a ba-jillion live soldier-fly larvae working in there within a week or two. The chickens will go insane with it then. As for the spent grain, there's not much in it that they can use.I assume chickens will as well.
It may bring feral hogs in but no more than your normal compost, most likely. The stuff does stink to high heaven for a day or two if it's left closed up. If it's out in the open, it deteriorates pretty quickly and it's quite good for loosening up heavy garden soil.there's a risk that the wild boars in the forest will come to eat them.
The whole point of mashing is to extract the food value from the grain. If we get up to 90% conversion and do a decent sparge we've taken virtually all the nutritional value from it. If you dumped it before the sugars were extracted, I can imagine it attracted plenty of attention.I dump mine in the woods on my property. Wildlife basically won't touch it and it just decomposes over time (it smells pretty bad after a while). Chickens are excited to see it until they figure out what it is and then ignore it. There is not much in there for anything to eat.
I once dump a batch that I mashed but didn't lauter or sparge, so it had a lot of sugar in it (I mistakenly thought it hadn't converted). The next day a bunch of rooster pheasants were devouring it. That's the only time I attracted wildlife.
If I remember correct, Herm caught the fly fishing & skiing bug (though I don't think he manages to do both at the same time)I haven't seen Herm in awhile. I hope all is good. I have a spot in the backyard where it gets dumped. Nothing really touches it.
would be very impressive if he did!If I remember correct, Herm caught the fly fishing & skiing bug (though I don't think he manages to do both at the same time)![]()
They probably sell it to PurinaBudweiser etc must do something with those quantities!
