I tried one of those, didn't like it, plus it was yet another item to have to clean.
Not to discourage you of course, just sharing.
You definitely won't be able to recirculate through it, unless at slight trickle.
I use bags in the kettle, with a false bottom.
For the early boil hops a quite a bit of hop matter gets through the bag, but it works well enough so as not to clog my pump.

My motivation for picking this up was to reduce the amount of waste (trub + hop debris) and transfer over more "clean" wort. I whirlpool and typically get a clean area to draw from. It's the final few moments that get me though. Once the liquid level hits the trub + hop pile, it starts to get pulled and transferred to my conical fermenter. If I were to cut off the transfer, that could amount to > .5 gallon of lost wort. Every ounce counts. I'm afraid if I did what you were proposing, the outflow (mesh screen) would get clogged with trub, and suddenly there is no flow, other than back over the top of the strainer. I'll have to give this all a shot and recalibrate my expectations.

I'm close to 6 gallons in the kettle. I know that only 5 or 5.5 is going to make it in the fermenter. I plan for that. When you have a ball valve and you transfer that way, a bunch of the shit stays in the kettle.. unless you are making a Craig beer.
I have the exact same kettle spider and a larger one as well. Usage depends on hop amounts going into the boil and/or whirlpool. I've always used a hop spider (or bags when I first started brewing) and I tend to brew hop forward beers. I personally don't think that using a spider or hop bag diminishes the bitterness or hop presence

Agree. The boil goes right through those hop spiders

Good one buddy!
I took the advice of @Sandy Feet and picked up some floating dip tubes for my kegs. There was a recent 20% sale, so I decided I'll convert some of them and see how it goes. I use gelatin fining, so my experience is cloudy beer pulled from the bottom for the first few pulls and then brilliantly clear beer. It will be interesting to see how it goes with clear(er) beer from the start.

I finally made it up to our new home brew supply place today.
It's a bit of a drive ,I think about 60 miles or so for me. But at least Minneapolis area has one again.
I bought grain and hops for another brew.
Nice place, a bit hard to find the first time but had all the grain choices one could need. The guy said their are expanding the choices further.
@HighVoltageMan! , if you havent been there , give it a go some time.

Late January is too cold in Georgia where Don lives LOL.
I miss the good old days when you had Midwest Supplies and the Northern Brewer in Richfield all within a 20 minute drive for me. I was living in Richfield/Eden Prairie for 20+ years, so life was good. I've been gone since 2019, so it looks like the landscape was vaporized for all brick and mortar sales. Not sure who else was present at the MHBA meetings (around 2015 when independent Midwest Supplies was sold). New owner from Chicago inherited money (from in-laws) and wanted to compete with Northern Brewer. He reassured us he was in for the long haul. Who knew 18 months later, he would merge with Northern Brewer and then both cashed out to InBev. Rising costs and fewer homebrewers sure did a number on the industry.
Trust me.. the 2 weeks of winter cold down here is brutal.. It might get below 32F for a few hours..
