What are you doing with homebrew today?

I did mash at 149, so we shall see what happens later. I am going to run this a little low temperature wise until the krausen starts to fall.
I usually stir twice, at 15 and 30 minutes. The wheat channelizes, so much of the grain never gets to see enough wort. For biab, just lift it out, drain 30-40 seconds, ease it back in - presto.

Nice idea with the ladder!

It probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to do that. I normally don't take pre boil gravity readings.
I don’t know why I feel I need to comment on this, but…my opinion —->. pre boil gravity and pre boil volume are the most important readings I take. If they are off, I have plenty of time to make adjustments if I want to. If they are spot on, then there is no need to take OG. I already know what it is.

I just checked my '24 hefe, which I intentionally reduced to have a 'lawnmower wheat' on tap. It weighed in at 1.043 / 1.009. Yours should be fine. My notes say I got a very optimistic 1.045 out of the mash, but my volume was lower than usual and it wasn't draining out of the malt pipe. I sparged from 4 to 7.7 gallons for the boil, and was at about 1.032. I added about 15m to the boil before the hop schedule to pick up a few points of gravity. IIRC this brew day inspired me to use more rice hulls.

I noticed in a picture you posted you have a brew bag in the malt pipe
is that normal?

Yes. I could probably get away without it, but I find it helps keep some grains from getting boiled, especially if I’m using a finer crush. Is that enough to matter over 6 gallons? IDK. It helps with clean up too.

Yeah I do BIAB with the false bottom in my electric
I thought about upgrading to the malt pipe but I like to keep it simple
Les to clean

Just got my first local hop rhizome home from post.
Last 5 years or so there has been plan to restore old local brewery hop varietes and now i joined to that. Hope that i get few cones this year

What hop variety is that?

I'm fixin' to harvest my first small batch of cascade. I'm expecting at least a few bines will produce a 2nd harvest later this year.

Variety of these Finnish hops is hard to describe, these are nowadays named after last farmer and/or farm.
This one is called Peräkorpi-Nisu, named after last 2 bigger hops farm between 1800-1900 centuries.
Aroma hop with AA between 4-6, with citrusy, spicy and herbal notes.

I have some hops that have been neglected
I may try to rejuvenate them
They are overgrown and stunted

Now this is the ONLY proper use of an aluminum ladder. Those things are DANGEROUS in so many ways.

I just noticed your kettle. You and I share a name, AND our kettles are nearly identical. I see you've removed the thermometer to prevent tearing your bag, though. What is that burner you're using? Is that from a turkey fryer or something?
