I'm just about to restock my bulk 2-row. I normally buy Breiss 2-row, but thought it would be nice to use a Texas malt since I live in Texas. Any thoughts on the Tex Malt 2-row?

Since I go in on a group buy for bulk malts, I end up with the RahrBSG-distributed stuff (and pay a lot less per bag) but this is one that I've wanted to try. Soco Homebrew in Austin stocks it. You could get a few pounds for a quick trial before committing to a bag. I just hate paying by-the-pound price for anything. :)

When Blacklands Malts was going, I used their stuff but it was expensive and while it was good and flavorful, it was hard to justify the substantial step up in price from Breiss, Rahr, etc. The Texmalt stuff is priced similarly being 10 or 15 bucks higher in price than Breiss and 5 or 10 more than Great Western, which is one that I like to use when I can get it.

I'm close to S/A, and not so coincidentally I happen to be short on 2 row... IDK SoCo had it, I'll need to give that a look. I've ordered many times; I'm close enough that even their peasant class shipping is one day, so if I order yeast and cooling packs, it gets here overnight and is still cool. They also call to confirm when I want stuff shipped and won't ship (at least close) yeast over a weekend.

I wonder what it is that keeps SoCo in business, but San Antonio can't keep a brewing supply place open...

Soco is always right on the edge. I think it's pretty much a labor of love. I'm quite sure it's mail order that keeps them going to the extent that they're able to. If you've never done so, you should get in on the Austin Zealots homebrew club bulk grain buy. Every January they do a group buy - bags of Rahr in the $45 range and high-quality imports for $50 to $60, depending.

That's pretty good, better than most Black Friday deals. gonna check that out.

I stock up for the year. This year I got some distillers malt and a bag of flaked barley for some "experimentation" but I have enough Pilsner, 2-row, Pale, MO and Munich to get me through all the beer I could possibly hope to brew. :)
