It's time for me to pick up another sack of Maris Otter from my LHBS. I checked and find that they carry two brands of Maris Otter. One is Simpsons, which most of us are familiar with. The other one is Pauls Maris Otter, which I have never heard of before. They are in the UK so maybe they are bigger over there. But, whether here or there, has anyone brewed with grain from this malster before; specifically the Maris Otter? Just wondering if they are equal/better/worse than Simpsons. They are a little cheaper than Simpsons ($85 vs $100) for a 25 kg sack so I'm tempted to save a little money but, not if the result negatively affects my beer.

Sorry, I haven't used Paul's.
Both seem VERY expensive to me though.
I just bought a sack of Rahr Pale Ale malt, which to me is pretty much equal to MO. I paid $72 Canadian. For reference $100 USD would cost me close to $140 CDN. If you bought my Rahr Pale with your Murican $$ it would cost you around $44 US.

I just had a look and I can get Crisp Maris Otter for about $94 a bag, this would work out to be under $60 USD

I don’t have any experience with Paul’s, but I like the idea of giving business to craft maltsters, which I believe Paul’s can be classified as. If I read correctly, they were established in 1965, so they must be doing something right. I just found myself in a similar situation where my LHBS just started carrying Riverbend Malt out of NC. In my case, it costs more, but my LHBS gives an AHA discount so the difference is negligible.

My local supplier isn't even showing Maris Otter in bulk at this point but when I got a bag around the first of the year it was around $75 or $80. Base malts from Briess and Rahr are 60 to $65 and anything imported seems to be $80 or $85.

Wow, that's less than I paid for Crisp Maris Otter 5 years ago at Northern Brewer (before they closed all their retail stores). The priced started to rise during the pandemic. I think when NB closed they were charging $85 per 50 kg sack. My current LHBS is a small place without the high-volume discounts I'm sure NB got. So $85-$100 for imported grain doesn't seem too bad. I'll gladly pay that just to keep them open.

Edit: "50 kg" should have been "25 kg"

Yeah...I go in on a yearly grain buy with a local homebrew club to get most base malts and can keep the cost down that way and I buy hops by the pound from Yakima Valley but I like to buy a bag now and then from the LHBS as well as specialty malts and odds and ends. Gotta keep the local guys going. :)

50kg?
That would be a 110lb bag...
The bags I buy, and am referring to are 25kg, or 55lbs.
I haven't ever seen larger bags than 25kg.
You would need to bring a friend to the LHBS for a 50kg sack.

I missed our last club bulk buy, we do it through the homebrew shop, so they benefit from that as it is an in and out transaction. They get paid 30 days before their bill is due to be paid, and don't have to sit on inventory.

look up super sacks...you can buy them from the distributors...gotta have a forklift to hang them on the racks to hold them. I think they are 1 ton bags of grain?

even with my price lists crisp is significantly more expensive per lb then bairds or thomas Fauwcet(sp). like $.10-.15 more per lb which is a big difference!

Like they say, "Go Big or Go Home"! :p

But, you are correct it was a 25 kg bag.

One of the big advantages of a LHBS is that I could sample each grain from the bins. The Pauls M.O. tasted a bit stale and did not have any of cracker/biscuit flavor that the Simpson's M.O. had. So, I spent the extra $15 for Simpson's Maris Otter.
