Didn't quite know how to title this, but I'd love a feature for when you're editing a recipe and you use the inventory feature, where it displays a checkmark if you have the inventory or not. Currently you don't know if you have the inventory until you click the Brew! button.

Does it show you when you are selecting the ingredient?
The software I use doesn't display it in the recipe, but it does show you when you are selecting the ingredient

It’s right in the recipe builder! Here’s a screenshot of a recipe I’m making. This is the hops area, but it’s the same in the other ingredients too. The inventory is always at the top

I'm still not describing it properly. What I'd like to see is, after I select all my ingredients, is some green/red indicator if you have the inventory or not to brew it, before I actually hit the Brew button. Or at least something more prominent to show me I don't have enough of this caramel in my inventory.

Something similar to the Style indicator

Hmmm I see, maybe some kind of shopping cart icon below the $ when there's not enough inventory available which can then start the "add recipe to shopping cart" feature. Does that sound reasonable to you?

What about making the $ sign orange or red when you don't have the inventory on hand?

Request Overview

This feature request proposes a visual enhancement within the Recipe Editor to improve user awareness of insufficient inventory. Specifically, we request changing the color of the $ sign icon from its current green to red when a recipe component's required inventory exceeds the on-hand quantity.

Justification

Currently, users may not immediately notice when a recipe they are creating or editing calls for more of an ingredient than is physically available. This can lead to:

  • Production delays: If a recipe is sent to production without sufficient inventory, it can halt operations while materials are sourced.
  • Wasted time: Users might spend time developing recipes that cannot be immediately fulfilled.
  • Inaccurate planning: Lack of clear inventory warnings can lead to misinformed production planning.
Changing the $ sign icon to red will provide an immediate and clear visual alert, allowing users to identify and address inventory shortages proactively. This enhancement will streamline the recipe creation process, prevent downstream issues, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Proposed Change

When a user is in the Recipe Editor and the quantity of a specific ingredient in the recipe exceeds the current on-hand inventory for that ingredient, the $ sign icon associated with that ingredient should change from green to red.

Technical Considerations (Optional, for discussion)

  • This change will likely involve a conditional rendering of the icon based on a comparison between the recipe's required quantity and the real-time inventory data.
  • Considerations for performance should be made if inventory checks are resource-intensive.

Acceptance Criteria

  • The $ sign icon turns red for any ingredient in the Recipe Editor when its required quantity exceeds the available on-hand inventory.
  • The $ sign icon remains green when the on-hand inventory is sufficient or when no inventory check is applicable (e.g., for non-inventory items, if any exist).
  • The icon change is immediate and responsive as the user adjusts recipe quantities.

This is exactly what I'm referring to, Brewfather has the feature I'm describing. Green/Yellow/Red indicators in the recipe designer lets me know if I have the inventory on hand before I click the Brew button. If I hover over the Red, it indicates Out of Stock. If I hover over the Yellow, it indicates In Stock and let's me know how much inventory I I have remaining.

I the same vein it would be cool to be able to delete your usage or atleast pick a substitute if it reads that the recipe would put you negative?

Is it so inconvenient to just look at the amount you have on hand when you pick from the drop-down? You'll know immediately that you need more before you can actually brew.
I suppose it would be handy to have some sort of visual aid like the amount number being red or orange or maybe automatically adding it to a shopping list but I've never relied that heavily on the inventory feature. I admit that for specialty malts where I use small amounts, it's a little hard to keep track. My biggest issue is that I have to remember to make a brew session every time I actually brew. Otherwise, inventory is off and I have to do an actual count and weigh stuff to be sure of what I have on hand. :)

it goes red when you are in the planning stage, but the problem that i have run into is that i dont know how to "undo" the usage from my inventory if i accidently start a brew that i have already added. i also dont know if it pulls similar grain? say the recipe calls for pils but i dont have any does it pull from my 2 row instead?

none of this is the end of the world since i manually redo my inventory before i order grain.

Yeah, clicking "Brew" and then not brewing is a problem. You have to go back and edit inventory. Bottom line, it's not a robust enough system to handle every eventuality.
Also, it's not designed to be a pro-level inventory control system. If you're running a business, you can't depend on it, solely, and would have to rely on a separate, dedicated tracking system, whether that's an old-fashioned clipboard and pencil or scanners and codes on bins and bags. :)

you would honestly be surprised. I have used some very expensive "pro" level software that was not worth a damn. This stuff is pretty good overall.

I was just looking to be able to delete a batch and have the ingredients go back into inventory. that shouldnt be that difficult.

I think the key to making it work well would be to not click "Brew" until the brew session is underway. I always forget to change the status from "Planning" to "Brewing" but I don't think the status change is what drives the inventory change. I don't really notice at what point the inventory changes but last I checked, it was accurate so even my planning stage sessions have deleted inventory.
