Hi,

I just signed up and used the online calculator for the first time. I tried to scale a Nut brown from this website. Based on my desired batch size the total mash water needed was= 31.6L

When I went to brew it...in the setup it states: "this recipe calls for 42.4 litres of water given the recipe and your equipment profile.

Sadly I brewed this using 42.4 of total strike water and as you can imagine massively missed all measurements :(

Besides not using common sense...what did I miss here? I don't understand where the 42.4L of water comes from.

Thanks

Post this in the Recipe editor section of the Brewers Friend Technical Support section of the forum.
@Pricelessbrewing can probably help you figure out what went wrong. You're the unfortunate victim of one of the glitchiest sections of the recipe calculator interface. Water volumes are calculated based on very specific inputs in your equipment profile and anything inconsistent will throw everything off, as you've discovered.

Maybe your brewing with your recipie copy water profile not your own.
If you've only put a batch or two down you may not have dialed in your brew system losses yet.

You've gotta know a few values first before hitting your targets...
Record all your volumes at each stage of your brew session and input these into your water profile.

Knowing what you want in the fermentor is a good place to start then add water from there.

Thanks for the replies. I feel pretty confident my equipment profile is correct and accurate based on my other brew sessions. I’m leaning towards software problem simply based on the fact that within ‘my recipe page information’ there are two completely different values for total water…which makes no sense and I wish we had caught this before brewing.

I would like to hear from the admins….but I can see from some other posts…that this might be an inherent glitch in the software. If true, I have to say, that as first time user/use, and just paying for a year subscription I’m not too impressed.

We really appreciate reaching out and joining the forum @Ninkas1.

We're currently working on improving this as we speak, and have an update that is still being reviewed and tested on our beta site (beta.brewersfriend.com).

I was unable to find your brew session in your account for some reason, perhaps it was deleted? But created a new one with a snapshot recipe accordingly to confirm the resolution, or lack there of on the beta site. There remains an issue of grain absorption unit conversion (3.9L on beta vs 1.9L on web). Otherwise all should be resolved.

Improving the volumes, temperatures, mash guidelines, and water chemistry accuracy and ease of use are our top priorities. I will make sure to followup with this thread as well once the relevant update has been released to the public.

If there are any questions, or further issues, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Hi,

I can see the copy of the "recipe snapshot" you made and indeed under brew session and the corresponding steps the volume is now correct. However, if you "view" the recipe "mash section" you will still see the incorrect water volume displayed.
