First competition

I entered my first competition a couple months ago. My English Porter took 2nd place in the dark ales table. The winner of the dark ale table also took the 3rd overall best in show. The beer could have been better too. The attenuation on this batch was not as high and it ended up 4 points high on the terminal gravity. One of the comments was low alcohol.
Looking forward to more competitions in the future.

Yeah, I think I got some good feedback. Some a little conflicting, like one judge rated my Helles pretty high and one judge, not so much. I know it really depends on the judge you draw. But this porter is good enough to enter in the National Competition next year for certain.

That sounds about right. I've always said, about 40% of all scoresheets can be trashed. Even good judges have bad days. The challenging part is that it is up to you to try to figure out which judge is correct and which one is very wrong. The truth is not usually someplace in between, it is one or the other. Hopefully the truth is in your favor, i.e., the higher score! But it isn't always.

Porters are fun beers to make as well. I don't dirty up the water for mine, and I do use Munich, but other than that, mine is pretty English too. Awesome about the 2nd place.

Nice! I love English porters. Competitions can be very humbling, but it’s a very satisfying feeling for a third party to validate your efforts.
