I was asked yesterday why I hadn't
to be honest I hadn't even thought of it
1976 was a lot of excitement that I remember
It just seems like a lot nonsense and manufactured excitement around for the 250th
here there is some historical stuff going on being in NE
There was a Rochambeau walk along the Route the French took on their way to meet GW in New York
they camped here in town the town commissioned a new Bronze statue of a French soldier on the site
there were a lot of dignitaries giving speeches
we drove along the route Henry Knox took dragging the cannon from Fort Ti to Boston but we always drive that route on our way to camp
Shays Rebellion site on the same road
we went to an actor doing a one person show depicting Abigail Adams that was fun

I think it is important to celebrate the round numbers in an extra special way, especially in the birth of a country, and even more with the 250 year old "great experiment"! The History of the USA is such a compelling story, definitely to celebrate.

Not brewing anything special, but I’m a sucker for a good history lesson. The History Channel has an interesting WWII show running all day tomorrow and a new George Washington mini series coming up.

And, of course, there’s always the educational Independence Day marathon to look forward to.

Not devolving into politics, but today we celebrate not the birth of a nation but the birth of the idea that a people can govern themselves and have certain *inalienable* rights. Truly radical concepts in the 18th century.

Some would prefer to govern us, perhaps because they truly believe they will do a better job. Maybe they think that some of us are smarter than all of us.

Many countries do not allow their people the rights we have. And many of those countries would prefer to deny those rights to the whole planet.

Now, we’re not perfect, but we still strive to be “more perfect”. Our biggest differences revolve around how to solve the problems, not whether problems exist or not.

We argue (here, about beer) but with the best intentions. Beware those whose intentions are unclear. And never assume that people are angels unwilling to take advantage.

The John Adams mini-series was also excellent, and of course, The Patriot. The first takes place much later but you get to see how they were trying to stay true to the ideals they fought for in practical implementation. The latter brought home the personal impact of the fight, and how those who fought it felt they had no choice despite really not wanting to fight at all. I think both were well done.

Sadly I did not brew for this event, though I certainly should have. (been on hiatus for quite a spell with too may irons in the fire.)
