There may not even be baseball next year! League wants a salary cap so that teams like the Brewers can compete with the likes of the Dodgers, and the Yankees. Even Toronto is a "larger market" team, but the likes of Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and many others just can't compete for free agents with a free market.
I know it's hard for big-payroll teams to share what they have but, having a more even playing field is good for the sport as a whole. It's why the Brewers have only been in 2 world series in their 56 year history and the Yankees have been in 12 and the Dodgers in 11 in that same time period. (Four times they played each other.) Reduced competition leads to reduced interest in the game. For instance I've mostly lost interest in Formula 1 because, year after year, I could be reasonably certain who would win a race before it even began.
