All - I’m brewing a recipe “Palmer” style, where I’m going to prep and boil 1/2 of my grain bill at the beginning of the boil, and then add the other half of the extract at flameout. I’ll then dilute the wort in my fermenter with some cold water until I reach desired gravity and/or batch volume. My question is - where do I define my fermenter top-up water, to accurately determine what my initial gravity should be, as well as get a prediction of ibu’s? For other brewing software, I’m used to entering a fermenter top-up value, but I’m not seeing that anywhere with Brewers Friend. What am I missing?

Right, I can't answer your question, but I wanted to say that you need to be careful with your top up water.
Make sure it's clean. Preciously boiled water or bottled water.
I sort of do what you do, but with biab
I measure gravity, then calculate how much water to add to get to desired gravity (but in my head or on paper)

Zambi - thanks for the cautions; I’ve been brewing for a number of years, so well aware of and agree with your comments. I’m used to brewing with Beersmith 3 or Brewfather, and I’m used to adding the fermenter top-up amount in the equipment profile. Once that is entered, as long as I got the batch volume entered, all the rest of the data just pops out, like estimated volumes(before and after), estimated gravities, estimated ibus, etc. I can’t believe that this feature isn’t part of Brewers Friend. Seems to be a shortcoming if I have to manually calculate that, like the old days

Calling @Yooper and @Pricelessbrewing

I don't use a lot of software calculations due to my set up.
I just asked the 2 fundi's who should now.

It absolutely does calculate top off. For example, here I did a quick PM recipe.
First, I set up my starting volume and my likely ending volume (I normally boil off 1 gallon per hour so yours may be more or less but this is in your settings).

Then, in the middle of the recipe, for mash guidelines, you click the hamburger menu choice to view or add these quick water requirements.

I clicked 'view' to see if it was what I was wanting.

That looks pretty good! So then I clicked 'add' and put it in the recipe that way:

Later, when I brew this, I'll click "brew" to open a brew session and there is also the mash calculator/water options in there on brewday:

Play around with it, and if your equipment settings are correct, you should be spot on with the water volume, the preboil SG, etc.

Yooper - Thanks for taking the time putting together the reply! I am aware of the manipulations and using the mash guidelines when I am making an AG or Partial/ mini-mash brew. My question however (my original post) was around brewing an extract brew, where I brew a partial volume, then make a late addition of malt and a late addition of water. When I select the recipe editor to auto-calculate my water values, I see no place to enter how much top-up I want to use. If I try to use the mash section of the recipe editor, it doesn't seem to have any effects on water requirements (maybe because I selected extract as the type in the first part of the recipe editor.
In addition, as I'm sure you also know, the IBU of the beer is affected by the initial and top-up amounts of water.

I'm going to try and manipulate the recipe editor to get the information I'm looking for, but quite honestly, it almost defeats the purpose. If I do my calcs by hand, like the old days, calculating my water balance through the brewing process and considering all the losses, that might work, but again, why bother; my IBU calcs probably won't be right.

I'll return and post if I get it figured out or find a workaround.

Gary

It’s in the quick water requirements- it’s calculated for you based on your settings as shown in the screenshot above.
