I'll post this in tips and tricks
probably you people have done this an I have also
I'll save yeast or pitch to a cake but yesterday I was brewing So just scooped some beer and Krausen off the top of my fermenting beer and pitched that
takes right off
not the first time I've done this and I'm sure it wont be the last

Would that be referred to as top cropping?

I believe so
Have you tried it?

That is not something that would be recommended without serious sanitation control. Commercially that is done in "clean rooms" where the big boys have open fermenters. lol but they do use snow shovels

lots of infection risks involved in krausening.

of course you need sanitation control we all know that I hope, how else would we be able to draw a sample to check gravity
I mean really, not everyone uses a tilt, I don't use one and have been pulling samples and have done open fermentation and never had a un deliberately infected batch
of course I guess I should have mentioned to use standard sanitation methods in my post

Edit: maybe I should add that as a disclaimer to my signature:)

lol never assume anything! Also a mention of sanitation is important when recommending this to people who might not know.

Its a good practice to spray it then open and then spray it again after it is closed!

but to get the Krausen I use a washed and sanitized measuring cup and clean hands
I open the fermenter quietly and take out a couple scoops of krausen
with the cap of krausen and active fermentation I have no worries

Hell ya! Have you had good results with it?

Are you pulling it at high krausen?

Ok dumb question here. I have reused yeast several times by just sloshing the leftover bottoms after transferring the beer to a keg and pouring a pint or two for further use.
is there a difference using the top cropped yeast?
