Water Quality --

and it makes crappy coffee
doesnt surprise me. chemistry is pretty wild.
Mike: Stop.

Humans have been brewing beer for thousands of years. It's unlikely we're going to find a new way to screw it up !

My local brewery jawed with me when I got my R/O system. While I still add some chemicals using brewers friend, and even sometimes try to correct for a profile, my locals use well water and correct for pH --only--. Ditto for the brewery on Roatan Island. Both of their beers are respectively great.

Relax. Enjoy a beer while crafting your recipe. Don't perfect your recipe after, say, > 4 beers ;-)
Remember, the brewers friend water profile values are like the pirate code.

Now, if you're that concerned about it, source distilled and add chemicals to a basic profile in the calculator, check your pH, correct it and GO!
But don't get spun up about a few numbers here or there.
i would bet that you could find the water reports online if you looked for them. brand and possibly region specific.

Everyone.....I appreciate the input and advice. I am going to run a test brewing the same SNPA beer with distilled water and my water. I will manage primarily to PH not getting overly concerned with individual mineral values except to keep them in a happy range. It will take a while to run the test but hopefully that will give me an idea as to whether I can use my water in the future. I anticipate with the approach of managing primarily to PH I will find them to be similar and good. Trust me, I do appreciate the Mike: Stop. I took the dog out for a long walk to clear my head. LOL

i think thats a good idea. maybe you could do half batches if your gear will let you?

Likewise good idea and half price perhaps. :). I suppose I just load the same recipe with half the grain bill and water volumes. Should also take less time as heating 8 gals of water takes me 30 mins. :)

Get the process right first. Then, worry about making shit better. Spring water, especially the shit I get sourced from the Ocala area, makes kick ass beer without giving the brewer a headache about the process.

well they probably have good water
Mike's water is very high in mg and will taste minerally
I don't think he has any options other than get used to the taste
I believe that is why he is asking he has already brewed with his water and is unhappy with the results
Ya @Dave Y why ya gotta be like that! :D

Spring water we have available in the land of hockey pucks and Neil Young has the mineral report on every label. I would definitely brew with it, and adjust if I felt I needed to. Compared to O water thought it is expensive, and the plastic containers, while recyclable, seem very wasteful to me. We use these, big ones for drinking water, coffee, etc, small ones for brewing because they are easier to manage. I pay by the liter silo jug size doesn't matter.

Did you consider distilled?
Not sure how economical it may be for you to purchase, or to run....but I have one of these.
You can make other "beverages", if it suits your fancy, as well (not that I'm suggesting you do
of course...lol). You wouldn't need such an elaborate model either.

Fortunately we have nice soft water, here on Vancouver Island, and I can't envision having to
do anything much but add a few salts.
