I know I'm going to come across stupid here, but if you don't ask, you'll never know.

When adding Mash and Sparge water volumes, do you add the total amount of water to be treated (thats available in the HLT)? OR do you add the volume of water you estimate you'll use?

Say for example, my HLT is full at 800 litres, but I'll probably only use 500 litres of that for the mash, what number do I use for the Mash water volume? Surely I'd have to use calculations for 800 litres even though I won't use it all?

Same said for the sparge. If HLT has 800 litres but I' may only use 400 litres of sparge water, what number do I use to calculate?

Thanks in advance.

I use way less mash liquor volume than you mate but I'm thinking you'd have to treat your total mash and sparge water for correct ph and mineral additions for the brew your trying to create. I'm a biab Brewer and brew in one vessel so calculating water volumes and acidifying or adding minerals to water is a sinch. Good luck
