What do you think? According to the starter calculator I need to make a big starter for my 40 gallon batch. I thought about building a big stir plate but couldn't find an appropriate vessel for it. The calculator said I needed a 17 liter starter. I need to make a bigger stir paddle to lower the rpm a bit. There's going to be an air line from a filtered air pump into the vessel as well. I'm posting this to see if anyone can find any issues that I might have overlooked. It's a 30w motor with speed controller sitting on top of a 27 liter fermonster. Sanitizing shouldn't be that bad I hope. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also have a shorter shaft so it fits on the 12 liter as well. Thanks.

Holy Jamoly!
A 17 liter starter!
That us a batch of beer on its own.
I'm afraid I am not qualified to comment on what you are doing there.
Maybe @Bigbre04 might have some better insight for you. Of course will probably just tell you underpitch VOSS...

Firstly I OVERpitch all of my yeasties! #beefin #

A 17L starter is bonkers.

What yeast?
OG?
I assume you are using liquid yeast? If it is dry yeast you dont need a starter.

Looks really cool! And I agree, you need a larger stir paddle. Is that 3-D printed?

I'm using harvested saflager 34/70, I figure it could use a boost. OG is 1.042. It's a 40 gallon pressure ferment @12psi. It's my house lager.

The goal of stirring is to keep yeast from gathering on the bottom and to oxygenate the wort. That small one might not be enough

As a rule of thumb, the increase in the yeast is about equal to the starter size: 2 liters adds double the pitch, 5 liters 5x the pitch… so maybe 20x the pitch here…

Cool.

I guess without cell counting that is a safe bet?

But that is only 10.5p you shouldn't need a super heavy pitch for that low of an og. I haven't made a starter in a very very long time, but I wouldn't think you need more then 4L??

Can you pull a bigger pitch?

What beer is the yeast coming from?

Obv different, but our new pitches for 30bbl tanks were less then this total volume, maybe 3 gals?

Yes, I'm just not a fan of it spinning that fast, I'm in the midst of making a larger stir paddle.

It's coming from an American light lager, yeast has been in the fridge for 2 weeks. I'm just going by what the calculator says. I'm new to harvesting and starters so I'm still learning. The calculator had 3 steps, the first 2 were 5 liters and the last was 7 liters, I figured one step is faster lol plus my stir plate hasn't arrived yet.

I was just asking because ipas/big beers can be very hard on the yeast. As long as it was stored properly it should still be viable!

Oh you typed 17 L in the first post? 7L isn't that crazy I wouldn't think? @Donoroto seems much better versed in this then I am

Good Googley Moogley!
