The battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64), the last of the Iowa class battleships built during WWII, was nicknamed "WisKy". On May 6, 1956, the Wisconsin collided with the destroyer Eaton during a man overboard search in heavy fog. The Wisconsin's bow was severely damaged and it was decided it would be faster and cheaper to replace the Wisconsin's bow with the bow from the partially built USS Kentucky (BB-66). Construction of the Kentucky had begun during WWII but had not been completed by the end of the war.
So the Wisconsin's crew gave her the nickname "WisKy" by combining Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Before lights, baseball diamonds were built with home plate to the west, and second base to the east.
When a left handed pitcher was standing on the mound facing home plate his pitching arm would be on the south side of the diamond.
Hence the expression "south paw" for a left handed pitcher.
