Mobile devices (phones, tablets) set an EXIF Orientation header, which makes them render incorrectly at times on websites. Everybody, even Google Plus, Facebook, and Flickr have to deal with this.

The next release will include automatic EXIF header detection and correction for all photo uploads.

 

Just confirmed this is fixed for both forum photo uploads and avatar uploads.
