Hello everyone,

I would like to get into kegging but cannot afford it. I however want to switch over to swing top bottles. I see ikea has a pretty good deal on glass swing top bottles the sizes are .5 Liter or 1 liter (17 or 34 oz). Any thoughts on those.

Also how about pressure barrels how are they

I want to get into kegging but can't afford it yet. I want to switch over to swing top bottles. Has anyone tried the swing top bottles from ikea. They have 1/2 liter and 1 liter bottles (17 oz or

Pressure same as a smaller bottle. If you can drink a liter at a time and are good with the beer being less carbonated at the end then go for it. 22 ounce bombers are nice for drinking a little more but fitting in a 20 ounce “pint” glass

Don't know that a bot would put all those returns in the middle of the message. Looks more like someone accidentally leaning on the keyboard.

I used swing tops for a couple of years. After a while I started noticing that the beer would lose carbonation after 3 or so months. Most of the beers I bottle I keep for a while and the quick drinking stuff goes in kegs, so I stopped using them. For bottling at the moment I use 500 mL PET bottles if it's a small experiment or 400 / 750 mL thick bottles if it's something I'm keeping for a while. I don't have much problem with the capping part.

Fair enough, we will see if this "person" returns to add to this thread...

Ikea swing top bottles...
Are they designed to hold pressure?
My concern would be that they are just decorative like everything else at Ikea, and could potentially become dangerous...

I agree
Only use swing tops if they were designed for carbonated drinks.
Those are the times I wish I was still in Holland.
I want swing tops? Just buy a crate of grolsch returnables. Drink them, rinse and use.
And when you don't need them anymore: return them and get your money back :D

I used swing top bottles for a while. If it was something that I wanted to store a while, I'd cap them with crowns. If it was a batch I anticipated not hanging around long, then I'd just cap using the swing top. The gaskets will dry out eventually, but easy enough to replace the ones I had.

I don't think those IKEA ones would work well, at least in the long term. The stopper looks like it's made to hold water and that's about it. You also can use crowns on them.
