A neighbor finds holes like this in his back lawn, just about every day. I’m not sure what that lighter-colored substance is in there, but he calls it frass. They are maybe 2 or 3 inches in diameter and 3 or 4 inches deep.

I’ve seen holes, but never filled like this. Several, most days.

Ideas?

Maybe some kind of burrowing beetle? Frass usually refers to invertebrate feces

you only have the hole, no size reference. i don’t see a pile so probably not a mole, don’t see a raised tunnel, so probably not a gopher. vole? Count your blessings, I have at least 5 active moles on my property and they’re damn near impossible to get in the soft sand here.

Not an armadillo, is it?

armadillos leave bigger holes.

Besides the visible grass, I mentioned the hole was around 2” in diameter and 3” deep. Like a mole hole, a bit smaller than chipmunk.

No tunnel or mole lumps.

We dread the sight of frass on our apples, but the codling moths that ravaged our crop last year got most everyone else’s around us, too. Since we won’t be using any insecticides, we’re hopeful that with other mitigative efforts we will get to enjoy Spitzenburgs and Honeycrisps later this year.

Maybe something buried by a squirrel or bird was discovered by a beetle or a grub.

An easy way to get rid of moles - urinate on the mole hills! We had a bad mole problem in a prior home - my wife read up on it and discovered the "pee on the hills" trick - so any evening we had been out, I was directed to the garden before I was allowed inside. Believe it or not - it worked! Within a few weeks of evening bathroom breaks in the yard - moles were gone!

your neighbors were thrilled with the show too!

That would work in the backyard, but the neighbors might not like that on the side. Lol. Those little bastards are brutal. I have been throwing all my coffee grounds in the yard.

Well now I know what to call that when I see it on apples...usually when I cut one open...the tree I've been getting sauce apples from gets that crap...I just thought it was some fungus like corn smutt.

Don, do you have mole crickets in your area of Georgia? That's my current stab at a guess. The diameter may be too wide

Good question. I don’t know. Several holes each night.

Thankfully not my yard, but Tom’s. I think I need to go see it with my own eyes, get a sample under the microscope.

Squirrels puking from hangovers??
