    Mill Operation

I reversed the stationary roller, reset the gap and works perfectly. You would think that brand new out of the box that I wouldn't have to take it apart to make it work. It must have been assembled after lunch on Friday when people go back to work after a few brews.

    Mill Operation

I was under the impression that Monster Mill was a good quality mill and I assumed that the mill was sent set up proper to mill the grain without having to manipulate the roller setup. I am using a Dewalt drill and it can only turn the roller in the clockwise direction. How would I flip the...

    Mill Operation

I sprang for a Monster Mill to mill my own grain. There is not much discussion about operating the mill. Per the mill instructions I should mill 2 pounds of grain to clean to rollers from the manufacturing. So the problem immediately presented itself. The grain just bounces around in the chute...

First All-Grain (BIAB) Recipe - SMaSH Pale Ale

It seems that boil off rate measurement is too loosey-goosey to be a reliable measurement point only to get into the ball park except to use as a variable in calculating how much extra boil time to adjust gravity to increase gravity, then the 5qrt/hr rate would apply. The biggest lesson I...

First All-Grain (BIAB) Recipe - SMaSH Pale Ale

I did my first all-grain brewing a couple of days ago. A couple of months ago I measured my boil off of my kettle by filling the kettle with a measured amount of water. Brought it up to a boil with the lid on. Removed the lid and boiled for one hour. At the end of the hour I turned off the gas...

    Mash Thickness question.

I am doing extract presently. The kits that I use uses extract but also requires using specialty grains and hops. I am interested in "advancing" to all grain. I've wasted a lot of money buying equipment that was advertised as necessary. So now I've decided to do research in advance of my...

    Mash Thickness question.

For my f So i have absolutely idea what my efficiency is, For my first attempt instead of setting the ca!curator to a pre boil volume to 6.5 gal instead of 7? Then either dilute or boil longer to hit my planned OG? Or, Just use the calculator to get the numbers, take notes, determine what my...

    Mash Thickness question.

So, to understand, collect a quart or two from the valve of the mash tun drain ( I don't know what this is called, wort after it comes off the grain) and save it to add to the volumn in my brew kettle "after" I've completed the boil? After the wort has been cooled? Would this open myself to...

    Mash Thickness question.

So, if my desired preboil volume is 7g (28qt) and I use 10lb of grain. Then my water loss due to grain absorption is 5qt. The volume of my strike water should be 19qt and the volume of my sparge should be 14qt.

    Mash Thickness question.

Does the Mash Calculator on this site take into account the water that is absorbed by the grain (0.5 qrt/lb) which is a loss?

    Mash Thickness question.

I have absolutely zero experience with all grain brewing. I want to start but while I am in the process of obtaining the equipment I am trying to understand the why's and how to do it. I'm reading and watching videos to obtain the knowledge and relying on the wisdom of the members on this forum...

Adding a spigot to my kettle

I right I'm doing extract but am thinking about getting into all grain. What I'm reading all grain using a mash tun is the way to go (for me). I really only would want to do 5 gallon brews. I think the least expensive way is to build a mash tun from an 10g igloo. Right now I have a 10 g SS...

    Brewing in the basement

I'm looking to buy the equipment a little at a time. Propane burners on Amazon are around $100 but the burners on NB and More beer are $200+. I'm guessing that burner on Amazon lack of precise temp control. Any recommendations what burner to buy for biab?

    Brewing in the basement

Right now I'm just brewing extracts. I'm trying to gather the pros & cons to jumping to all grain/BIAB. Many pros to sticking to extract since I just enjoy drinking stouts and porters. Not as much interested in adding flavors to my beer. What I gather that all grain advantage is the joy of...

    Purging secondary

Yes. The description states that CO2 would be allowed to vent but O2 not. Myself, I also like the S type where I can see that there is positive pressure in the fermenter ensuring that there is no leaks.
