Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Unfortunately not, the wife and I are down in Fort Lauderdale, almost as far as possible from Milwaukee! There isn't a whole lot that's too jazzy about our days in real life I'm afraid. They are mostly just hanging out at the moment. We got some sniffles from the ER, so I'm taking a few days...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Okay so I finally got them kegged and tasted. The wife is on the mend, just down to 1.5 arms for a bit. So the good news is whatever that funk smell was has gone. Either it was incomplete fermentation, or the voss just took control and covered it up. Both beers ended up at 1.009, bringing them...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Hey guys I haven't gotten about this, promise. My wife dislocated her elbow so I'm on full baby, cooking, and cleaning duty. I tried to convince her to keep her bones in place since I wanted to get this done, but she went ahead with it anyway. I'll get the chico into a keg shortly!

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

That's good to hear. These two batches have been made in the same bucket. A second hand one I picked up and only use when my regular one is busy. Maybe time to upgrade the fermenters...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Is the funky aroma typical with kveik? This batch was the lalbrew voss, but the ale I made before was with whitelabs opshaug and the funk was real. It's finally aging out, but it was nearly a dumper. I know it's a farmhouse yeast, but everything I read claimed it was clean.

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

That's what I've heard. I initially had pretty high hopes for the yeast, but read a lot of conflicting opinions and kinda pushed it to the back of my yeast stock. I bought two packs and used my first one to try to help a beer that hadn't dried out enough. I think it'll be perfectly drinkable...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

You were bang on about the voss, krausen dropped about 48 hours after pitching the yeast. I've been waiting to take a gravity reading before updating, but I've been reluctant to open it up and take a reading without having another make-shift lid ready to go. Didn't want to lose my protective co2...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Dry pitched the packets. The voss was 11g, Chico was 12g. I siphoned the wort into buckets from high up so there was lots of splashing, and added the yeast in at about halfway full.

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Alright guys, finally did it. It definitely could've gone better, I was a little ill prepared. I've added my brew notes below. I'll let you know the comparison in a few weeks. Edit: imgur link to photos - https://imgur.com/gallery/SaCQ1RX Just add a few notes to explain some of the issues: -I...

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

Sorry guys! Meant to get the brew in over the weekend, but my baby forbade me. Gonna try to get it done this week and will definitely keep everyone updated. Also if anyone is in south Florida I am more than happy to give out a few samples!

Split batch ale - Voss and Chico

So in one of my ingredient shops I bought a dry packet of voss out of impulse. It has sat in my fridge for a few months as I haven't been that stoked to use it. I also recently made the switch to BIAB, and have some left over extract. I will probably save some to top up OG as needed, but I...

    Sweet beer/poor attenuation

I thought about that too. I know it's only a couple points off being in the attenuation range (75%-80%). I also considering boiling some hops for a bit to make a bitter tea and adding it. I've made a similar recipe at the same ibu and og and it was much drier, though that could've been perceived...

    Sweet beer/poor attenuation

Hey again guys. First off, thanks for all the help while I've been getting into this hobby. For my last brew, I tried cali yeast instead of using s-05, figured it was cheaper for more. I brewed a pretty tame extract pale ale (1.046 og, about 30ibu). I rehydrated and pitched my yeast at about 75...

    Aluminum kettle lesson

Hey guys, thanks for the messages. After brewing, I almost immediately dumped it when I saw the metal things. However, in the spirit of homebrewing I decided to ride it out. I took a gravity sample today, after 10 days (1.012 still, down from 1.046), and decided to try some, and no metal taste...

    Aluminum kettle lesson

That's what I'm hoping. Though I'm less concerned about drinking the shards of metal than the possible aluminum poisoning from the bits in there. Either way I found someone selling a stainless kettle, big enough to try biab. Silver lining.

    Aluminum kettle lesson

Just finished brewing a nice simple extract pale ale, and learned a bummer of a lesson. I'm pretty upset that it happened. I should've known better because I work with metals often, but at the same time I would've never thought about it. I have used this equipment several times before without...

    Hazy little attempt

This is good to know. I might hang onto this for when I move to biab. How do you like the voss? I had some dried packets coming and was considering using it for this batch.

    Hazy little attempt

I've been going back and worth about when I should add the majority of my hops. Is it actually more flavorful adding them after the boil? I was definitely going to dry hop more.

    Hazy little attempt

Hey guys! First off, you have all been super helpful with all the problems that stem up for new brewers, so thank you. With my first beer kegged and delicious, I want to try to make a lower gravity version of one of my favorite beers, hazy little thing. I've checked the sierra nevada website...

    First recipe help

Hey guys, just an update for anyone that is curious. Going to keg the beer tomorrow. I've been sampling whenever I've taken gravity readings, and it is absolutely delicious. Very citrusy, not too bitter. Successful brew, will post a picture!
