    Drinking My First Beer!!

I had read the high mash but didn't understand it until your post. My strike water is normally at 156 and the grain is pretty close to 68 degrees so far. After adding grain my temperature settles out at 152 pretty much for the entire hour. Sounds like it is lower attenuation and not that I...

When a recipe says to add hops "0 mins" and what's a whirlpool?

Disclaimer, I am still new to brewing with only about 5 batches of all grain (6 if you count tonight). With my setup I keep my pump running and whirlpool though the entire boil. Then after the boil I whirlpool for about 5 minutes and then off to the fermentor. Every time I have moved from boil...

    Drinking My First Beer!!

Well, the results from my first all-grain beer(s) are in and I am HOOKED! The first was a Strawberry Blonde (OG - 1.057 / FG - 0.995). As expected, based on all the help provided here, it was not the best but is drinkable. The second beer was an Oatmeal Stout (OG - 1.072 / FG 1.030), great...

    new here, not to brewing

Welcome to Brewers Friend. I am still working on my first round of beers.

    Co2 Carbonation

Well, there is a bit (ok, a lot) of impatience on these first batches of beer. We want to drink some of them this weekend which is where the keg comes in. Plus some is going home with friends after the weekend. Pretty sure that the beer will be gone pretty quickly so not overly concerned...

    Co2 Carbonation

As my bottling day is slowly approaches I have stepped up my reading which in turn has just added that much more confusion. I have read several online articles that talk about swapping your gas and liquid connections on the keg. This would allow CO2 to run down the liquid tub and up through...

    Co2 Carbonation

Is this for bottling off a keg only or does this same rule of thumb apply to a home made kegerator?

    Brewer’s Waste

All of my spent grains go out back. Between the deer and other wildlife it is normally gone by the next morning

Priming Sugar on VERY low FG beer

Quick update on my beer. I just pulled it off the strawberries to a clean carboy to finish fermenting (if there is anything left to ferment). The original gravity was 1.057, the gravity when it when into the secondary was 1.002, the gravity tonight was 0.996. It has great color but taste VERY...

Basic homebrew recipe needed with basic materials

Welcome to the forums. I am new to brewing, as in I just brewed my first beers about 2 weeks ago and they are still fermenting. I added alpha enzymes (AG300L) to my first batch (long story) and the result is coming in slowly. My initial gravity reading was 1.057 so the ending gravity after...

Original Gravity, Final Gravity, and Efficiency

I never looked at the recipe tools while I was in edit mode, nice to know. I simply ran the grain bill knowing it would come out with a higher original gravity. Now that I have taken the time to look I see where I can change efficiency my numbers should have been much higher on the third...

    Bench bottle capper

Well, regardless of how much this thread went off topic I found all of the conversation helpful. Since my wife wants to "bottle" her own beer I can already see the writing on the wall.

Original Gravity, Final Gravity, and Efficiency

Thanks Nosybear, that just confirms what I had expected looking at the numbers.I leaned very quickly on my first batch that there is a significant difference between final kettle volume vs initial fermentor volume and have started adjusting my grain bills accordingly.

Original Gravity, Final Gravity, and Efficiency

My first of probably many dumb questions over the next few weeks and months. Each of the three recipes I have brewed have an original gravity and final gravity listed. Do I assume correctly that the original gravity listed is based simply on the grain bill and efficiency I have in the system...

Water Volume Bill's Double Chocolate Milke Stout

Not trying to hijack the post but have a question about the use of Lactose (Milk Sugar) in the recipe. Since this is a sugar and does not need amylase for converting is it just added to the wort after you have sparged over the grain?

    Krausen Question

New to brewing but thought that tasting was important. I did a fly sparge (think that is the right term) on my first three batches last week and tasted the liquid left on the grain after I was done to see if there was any sugar taste, tasted the spent grain (not really that good), and tasted the...
