I've been brewing since I was a wee nipper, mostly extract but I took the all-grain route two years ago and I will never look back. I love this website and have found it so useful. I hope I can learn more from all your wealth of experience. I specialise in American Pale ales styles - the hoppier the better. Even in Scotland we can get U.S. hops like Cascade, Amarillo and Simcoe, but there are still those (me included) that are still attracted to the historic dark arts of using bog myrtle, heather and spruce tips. I hope to one day share some of my own tales.

Welcome there scottie my mothers side hails from that area a Kerr from the border region or low lands. Good luck in your pursuit in brewing great beer weather it be with strange ingredients as you mentioned. Isn't that beer called braggot?

I think it is

I think you are right. Braggot style is when you brew without hops? Hops are hard to grow in Scotland due to the soil and climate so in ye olden days they used what came to hand to bitter the beer. I think this is why the Scots made beer sweeter and maltier their English cousins. It's all very different now of course.

welcome to the forum
Thanks. I love your website - very interesting recipes, particularly the Belgian Blonde with Amarillo and Saaz hops. I'm planning a Belgian ale next week but was going to use Halleratauer and Saaz. I might tweak it and try the Amarillo which I love anyway.

Welcome. We have juniper, sage and current on our property. Maybe branching out is in my brewing future. Thanks for bringing it up.

Hard to comprehend, by those in hotter climates but Scotland is now producing hops - in poly tunnels! I just dry hopped an American style pale ale yesterday with mosiac, simcoe and citra. I doubt very much these home grown hops will smell as good as these did.
