I'm interested in trying a lager-type beer fermented at ale temperatures. A steam lager, I believe it's called.

Any suggestions on the yeast I should use? My LHBS has a vast selection of White Labs but not a lot else, so something in their line would be best.

California Lager, which I believe is the strain that Anchor uses to make their steam beer.

edit: That's Wyeast 2112 and White Labs 810

Excellent! Thanks, Oliver!

I checked out the WLP810 (called San Francisco Lager) and it looks like just the thing. With the weather around here cooling off, I think it's reasonable to get a fermentation at around 65 °F or so. Time for a Steam Pils!

A steam lager is going to come out like a lager. If you want a steam-type beer, a California Common, use the California Common yeast at the recommended temperatures. WLP810, San Francisco Lager Yeast, at a relatively high temperature, around 62.
