What are you doing with homebrew today?

For a change, I am brewing. After checking the tightly sealed double bagged grains for infestations, I decided to brush off the rust and get down to business. Today I brew my Summer Pale Ale 2025 - that’s right, these grains were supposed to be used a year ago. Have no fear, for it will make beer!

Moving along with the boil, just about to start adding hops. It was a good start, getting within a point of projected pre boil gravity. Wort tastes good.

Well that was fun! And kind of like riding a bike, I didn’t even need training wheels.
Into the fermenter went ~2.75 gallons of sweet, hoppy wort at 1.052 S.G., just a point shy of projections. I just hope the expired (12/2023) US-05 is up to the task. If not, I have a packet of Voss ready. I have done my part, now my wort is in the hands of the yeast.

Thanks for the welcome @BarbarianBrewer

This morning I was like a kid at Christmas. Woke up and went straight to the utility closet to check progress. To my delight, the 2.5 year expired yeast had awakened and were doing what yeast does in wort. A bubbling airlock is a reassuring thing for a home brewer. Patience is what I preach, and now patience is what I must practice. Looking ahead, soon our garage refrigerator will have to handle everything during our kitchen remodel, so out goes the keg and CO2 tank, in go the racks and food. So it seems that bottling this batch will be the way to go.

Can't have two fridges in the garage?
Could, but we won’t be keeping the older fridge that was here when we moved in 2022. The garage fridge is 2024 new. We are getting all new appliances for the kitchen, so the old stuff has to go. It is going to be an interesting summer without a kitchen.

Monitoring fermentation of Summer Pale Ale, still active according to the bubbler. The closet where I keep my fermenters has maintained a consistent range from 66-68 F since Saturday. I wonder if my glass of water atop the fermenter is expressing anywhere near the temperature inside the fermenter.

You will miss the sink the most.

It’s a good thing we used to be avid campers. I have done a lot of camp dishes without the luxury of a sink, but certainly that can get old quickly. We are fortunate to have a pod of 5 food carts and a tap room a short 10 minute walk from home that will see more of our business.

Today I cleaned out a couple kegs. The smallest (1 gallon) was then filled with filtered tap water, and is currently chilling in the fridge. The next step is carbonation, and then we have bubbly tap. My wife is very much interested in making shrubs to flavor bubbly water.

I also have been contemplating my next brew, hoping to get one more completed before our kitchen is gone.

Had 2 recipe kits and yeast in the shopping cart to take advantage of the Adventures in Homebrewing recipe kit sale. 30% off when buying 2 or more kits from their summer recipes. But the $20 shipping fee stopped me from placing the order. LHBS is still cheaper and they need my money more

Wish I had a local place.

Came home to 4 gallons of pale ale on the floor under the kegerator. It's had over a week to mold and dry/get tacky. The floor is stained where the mold was. I take back anything positive I ever said about the FlotIt 2.0

I was looking forward to drinking that
