I have Gout ... What are you doing about yours?

My first gout flare up was a year and a half ago. Its really grabbed hold of me this year. #1 trigger is beer or better yet, brewers yeast. I sure could use some advice. I've done my own research. I'm interested in what others are doing and still enjoying our favorite hobby. Can't reply during the day but I will get back atcha in the evening.
 
Well, drastically reduce beer intake. Gin & tonic is a reasonable substitute, as is Jack & diet Coke. There are many options.:rolleyes:

Drink lots of water. I mean lots, like 144 ounces a day (that's 12 oz per hour for half the day). Easy to say, hard to do, but the hydration helps remove the uric acid from your system.

I am not a doctor, so take this advice with a figurative grain of salt. Your doctor is going to be your best resource to help resolve the problem.
 
Straight cherry juice works for my step dad
 
I have friends that suffer from it when they drink 1 type of lager, but not another.
Other than that, I know nothing about it.
 
I went through a year long season of Gout, Had to drop off the Keto Diet, and adjust protein intake.
also, taking Vit C (500mg) I think a day has helped as well, talk to a Dr. there are meds to take, but I was not willing to deal with the side effects.
 
I've known enough people with it. Cherry juice from what I understand helps, but you need to stop being stubborn and go see a doctor. Things can be much better in life when you actually try to deal with them before they get out of hand.
 
I personally cut way back on red meat and pretty much eliminated sugary drinks (I just drink water or soda water during the day), and that helped. I haven't really changed my beer intake. I might get a slight flare up once a year or so... a fair trade in my book. If it gets bad, I'll go to the clinic to get some meds that help.

Cherry juice is a new one for me... haven't heard of that. Seems a little counter to the sugary drinks advice, but I'll give it a shot.

Cherry juice is not very sweet or sugary. Kind of tart and acidic, a lot like cranberry juice, as opposed to cranberry juice cocktail, which is mostly sugared water.
 
Tart Cherry, Cranberry and lemon juices act as a diuretic in most folks but definitely tons of water helps with many things (non medical lingo here)

If you don't mind taking meds, Allopurinol is your best friend. No episodes in years and still loving my beer.

I'd better knock on some wood.... I haven't had a flare up in years. I was first prescribed allopurinol and was allergic to it. Only medicine I know of that I'm allergic to. So, at this time my doctor prescribed probenecid. I took it for a long time and had to change doctors and my new doctor wanted me to go on another "new" medicine for gout,{can't think of the name of it}, but it just seemed to bring it on and just didn't work. I went back on probenecid and so far so good. Sometimes shellfish would bring it on for me. It would be bad to be unable to enjoy the fruit of our labor. Wish you the best and hopefully get some relief.
 
I've never had it and I hope to keep it that way, but there seems to be some pretty good advice here. Talking to a doctor being the primary one.
