The sites yeast pitch rate calculator says i need to make a 2 step starter. My question is should I decant the liquid off the slurry before adding the second batch of wort? Otherwise I think I'll end up with a gallon size starter. This is my first attempt at a starter.

Yep, let it settle out and decant the liquid.

Based on my first experience with a starter, I'd suggest a blow off tube set up and not just a regular plastic air lock. Thing took off fast and hard. (* The beer ferment started fast and went hard)

I use a 1 gallon clear jug, with foil. The foil keeps it sanitary, but lets in necessary air, which helps the starter grow. A stir plate is also recommended.

If your starter is foaming up too much, I'd highly recommend some Fermcap-S.....one drop in the starter keeps the fermentation under control and inside your container.

CHEERS!
