Volume for priming sugar calculation

I have a new conical fermentor. How can I accurately tell the volume I have so I can add the correct amount of priming sugar?

Fill with water, a litre at the time if you are metric, probably 0.25 gallon if you are not.
Take a permanent marker and put volume markers on your fermenter
