So I have being doing a series of beers starting with Something Different where I experiment with different things. Something different was using Black patent malt at a low percent for some interesting flavor and color in a golden lager. I have Something Bigger on right now which is a golden lager that is 5.6%, but is using Apex Berlin Yeasties instead of my normal Munich variety. Both beers have been really good overall and interesting for sure.
I just made a recipe for a Red lager what i think will be really interesting. I have never used red x in this high of a percentage without a bunch of roasted malt. I originally wanted to use exclusively red x as a base malt, but it was getting alot darker(12srm) then i wanted(8-9srm). I think the touch of Spec X will add a little flavor to it without bringing it into a big red category.
Let me know what you think!
