So, went about drilling my new fridge for co2 lines today. Carefully, cut the plastic, removed the insulation to see that there was no coolant lines in the side of the unit. Yay! There isn't. Proceeded to drill through and hit a coolant line! Fuck my life!

Well if that doesn’t suck.

Yup, called two repairmen. Both said it's junk. No way to fix where I killed it.

Guess it's an insulated box for my fermenter now

I've been there and done that...

Been thinking about drilling and haven't.
Real glad now :)

Fear of this exact result is why I have never drilled into my beer fridge. I'd love to make more room in my fridge by putting my CO2 tank outside. But then I think "What if..."!

The one time I drilled into a fridge, I started with the plastic inside liner, cutting a nice 2” circle with a hole saw, by hand with the center bit retracted until it was about even with the saw teeth. Painful. Then I used an x-acto knife to chip away the styrofoam insulation until I hit the outside metal. I could plainly see all was clear that way.

I know for sure that my chest freezer has coolant lines in the sides, so not even going to try with that one. If I really want a better way to get lines out of the freezer, I will make a wooden collar and just move the top cover a bit.

The fridge I killed was a $150 used fridge. For the fridge I have now, I cut hole very carefully inthe inside like Don describes. With the coast clear I went ahead and drilled the hole. That was about 5-6 years ago :)
