    Cleaning a counterflow chiller

Not sure how your CFC is configured or what you have for wort side fittings. Slowly fill the chiller, while purging air, with a alkaline brewers wash or Oxyclean and let it soak for couple hours, then rinse with 180+ degree water. Rinse again with StarSan you should be good to go. This is what...

8 inches =5 gallons in my brew pot

Take a piece of lead free 1/8 solder about 20 inches long. Fold in half a bend a hook at the fold to hang on the inside your pot. Cut the two ends in the pot at what ever pre boil and post boil levels you need. It will become part of your kettle.

    Chillers

Try this. Purchase a fine mesh colander at a kitchen supply store and run the cool wort from CFC through colander. You will see the cold break collect it looks like white grease. Plus this also aerates wort. I also use the colander to scoop hot break out at beginning of boil instead of letting...

Original gravity is consistently higher than anticipated

How much more wort do you end up with? Does your hop utilization seem OK? Maybe to much evaporation during boil?

    what chiller to use

My reply is self centered promotion I make the Exchilerator. The best part of a CFC is that is not twisted(convoluted) with a fairly large diameter it will not plug with trub solids. This very important if you plan on a whirlpool hop additions. Whirlpool through CFC down 170ish stop cooling...

    Whirlpool Hop addition

another way is to run your wort threw your CFC back to kettle creating a whirlpool and cooling wort to a controlled temp. The advantages are you reduce temps quickly avoiding DMS, you get temps down below 170 before adding hops, no longer having to worry about alpha acids you'll just have aroma...

    Equipment Upgrade

If you purchase a cast burner put a drill into each of the wholes to clean them out. I found about 1/2 them plugged with slag form casting. Now every flame tip is the same.

    New to BF

Hi I manufacture the Exchilerator counter flow chiller. If there are any questions about CFC's maybe I can help especially if you are building a home brewery. Some CFC's can be used for step mashing ( HERMs) as well as cooling wort. Something to think about as you design your system. Coolitfast
