    Shrinkage! Costanza's Efficiency Bug

Over a year later, and I notice that shrinkage is still not incorporated into the "quick" water volume popup on recipes.

    Feature Update?

Hello good folks, If I'm not mistaken, things started picking up around here with new development in December, more or less - about 3 months ago perhaps? A couple of features, like photos, have trickled in. But lots of "we'll take a look at its" have also appeared in response to suggestions...

    Calculate Grist by Percentage

I created my own spreadsheet just so I can do exactly that... it's a great approach that nobody else seems to implement.

[BUG] Pre-boil gravity calc in recipie builder

Again, I'm not sure we're on the same page. Pre-boil gravity doesn't get affected by any losses. Only efficiency does, because it's a combination of gravity and volume. When you mash, you extract sugars from the grain. After the mash, whether you take a gravity sample directly out of the...

[BUG] Pre-boil gravity calc in recipie builder

Hmm, careful here. Did you really mean kettle loss for pre-boil gravity? You don't lose anything in the kettle at that point. Did you mean mash tun loss? Kettle loss is only post-boil, when you leave trub behind on the way to your fermenter. Also, whether you drain every drop into your...

First all grain (Its a SMaSH)

I made a luscious Czech style Pilsner this winter (with Saaz) but I followed a lager fermentation protocol. The one caution I can give is about that water of yours. The very things about it that make it work for stout are what make it unsuitable for pale beers. That's why stout was invented in...

    Star rating on recipe/session list

Would love to be able to browse my own brew sessions, and recipes too, and see the beers that turned out great - and the ones that sucked. As it is, one has to rely on memory or go into each one to see if there are notes. How about a simple 5 star display where you click the number of stars to...

    well water

I have well water from the tap and I brew all grain, but if you're talking about topping off I assume you're using extract? After some very bad tasting beer and a Ward Labs test, I stopped using my well water for brewing. I use distilled water plus salts as needed for the style. Brewing water...

Target water=Burton (historic) leads to harmful ionic levels

Re: Target water=Burton (historic) leads to harmful ionic le The water profiles are historical and primarily cited for academic purposes. I know they're in all the brewing software now, but I don't think it's a best practice to literally match the extremes of some of them. At least I...

    Brew Calendar?

It's not just about future dating the entire brew session; that does indeed work. I would like to be able to put a planned event related to the brew session (a type of log entry) into a calendar. We could call it a Reminder. For example, after I package, if there are primed bottles I would like...

Beer style drop down menu doesn't work

It is doing this on on my iPad (Safari). There's only one menu with all the styles in it, no sub-menu.

    Shrinkage! Costanza's Efficiency Bug

Thanks - and feel free to PM/email if you want further clarification. I have a nice spreadsheet that shows the discrepancy I believe I'm seeing.

    Brew Feature

For what it's worth, I have never experienced that issue in about 20 brews plus numerous additional started/aborted ones. Hopefully it was just a glitch? I tried just now and it worked fine.

Fresh Ginger in beer. How much is too much???

It's important when comparing weight, volume, etc. of adjuncts to mention when in the process they are added. I used 1 oz of fresh ginger in secondary (4 gal of witbier) and it overwhelmed the beer.

    Keeping Mashtun clean

I use a cooler with a false bottom, and there isn't a trick I've discovered at least. Pretty much have to disassemble the bottom and valve connector every time. It's not a big deal to me though. A lot of grain gets trapped under there and will definitely harbor bugs if not cleaned up. Probably...

    Shrinkage! Costanza's Efficiency Bug

I definitely have the correct profile selected, and in any case, all of my profiles include a shrinkage element. It doesn't work. I edit, save, and view repeatedly while working on recipes and the shrinkage is never incorporated into the water requirements. Tracking down the efficiency impact...

    Shrinkage! Costanza's Efficiency Bug

Just to follow up and assist in your research: The Quick Water Requirements window states that values are calibrated to 68F. But that doesn't really make sense, because there is no compensation for wort shrinkage in any of the figures. If the values were calibrated, you'd have the volumes...

    Shrinkage! Costanza's Efficiency Bug

This has had me pulling hair for weeks and I think I've found the culprit. I did a bunch of research, comparison with BeerSmith, and spreadsheet geekery to track this down. There's a parameter for post-boil shrinkage due to cooling in the equipment profile; this is typically set to 4%. However...
