2025 AHA Home Brewer of the Year

    That's impressive - CONGRATULATIONS!

    Chevalier Malt

Yes I have - my wife likes mild ales, so Ashburne is the go-to for that, and I just brewed a Best Bitter with a couple of pounds of Ashburne in it - gives good body and mouth-feel - I like it!

    Chevalier Malt

Looks like it is readily available in the States - cheapest I found was $2.99/lb at Hopcraft Supply. Looks like an interesting malt - since most of my brewing is lower (less than 6%) alcohol and generally on the English Ale styles, it could add interesting malty flavor!

    rotten egg

Yes it is - and so easy to use!

    Mill Operation

Me too - and yes, yeast is wonderful!

    Mill Operation

Check you are turning the mill rollers the correct way! I think most people use a drill (I do) to turn the rollers, try flipping the drill to rotate the opposite direction!

    Homebrewing equipment

My thoughts are they are BIG brewing systems - what are you going to do with all that beer? Bottling or kegging are the typical answers, but the typical homebrew Corny Keg only holds 5 gallons (US). I "thought" I wanted a system that would brew 10 gallon batches, but the price of a fermenter...

Anyone know what kind of animal did this?

LOL - the actual instructions were to mix urine 50/50 with water and pour it on the molehills, but we lived in a pretty secluded location - so I was sent out for the direct method!

Anyone know what kind of animal did this?

An easy way to get rid of moles - urinate on the mole hills! We had a bad mole problem in a prior home - my wife read up on it and discovered the "pee on the hills" trick - so any evening we had been out, I was directed to the garden before I was allowed inside. Believe it or not - it worked...

Graduating to your own all grain recipes...

I started in whole-grain much the same way - originally with kits and crushed grains. I found pre-crushed grains to be too fine, so purchased a mill and kits with uncrushed grains - much better! After getting the hang of my all-in-one system, I decided to create my own recipes, mostly...

    New to Kegging

Also don't forget that priming will lead to additional sediment in the bottom of the keg, not a huge problem but it can affect the first pint or two. I shortened the dip tube on most of my kegs by about 1/2" to avoid the sediment! Not sure on the purging times mentioned, I typically purge for...

    Pricing Yeast

The problem I have with More.Beer is they claim "free shipping" until you add something that doesn't qualify for free shipping - such as a 50lb bag of malt!

    Pricing Yeast

I use dry yeast and found the cheapest place is Amazon - often in multiple pack deals, but much cheaper than any of the homebrew stores! I do agree the price has risen substantially over the last couple of years!

    Hop and yeast comparison tools

I've been using the site for a while - the grain tool is also useful, especially when building a recipe from scratch!

    STC 3008 12 volt wiring

That's exactly it! They are commonly referred to as "Bosch" relays, but there are many variations that are the same form factor. You can typically get them at any auto parts store.

    STC 3008 12 volt wiring

I presume your charge controller is connected to a 12v battery, if not, it needs to be. You should be able to get a suitable relay (SPST) from an auto parts store - they are very common. Wire the output from the STC to the relay, and the relay contacts operate as a switch in the positive 12v...

Looks to me like that should work!

    recommendations for chest freezer

I have a 7cu ft chest freeezer that I got for $100 on Amazon Marketplace. Made a collar and installed three taps! It holds three corny kegs easily, plus other brewing supplies (hops, yeast, etc) and lives in my garage - works great and even in a relatively sparcely populated area there are...

    Star San contamination

About ten years ago I read a post in another forum from a staff member at a brewery regarding Star San - he stated that the Star San sales rep would show it's safety by mixing up a batch at normal strength and then proceed to drink it! It is sold as a "no rinse" sanitizer, so my guess is that...
