    Probably a silly question

This is a good article on biotransformation: https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/blog/2018/12/19/an-uncharted-wilderness-understanding-hop-compound-biotransformation I remember being blown away by the Cloudwater DIPA versions they talk about. I did a split batch recently where one was double dry...

    hops: pellets or leaf?

I tend to favour pellets because it results in less trub, especially for dry hopping. Pellets can be quite dense and clog up a hop filter tho so I might use leaf for the boil in future.

    Strange beer, leaning to Graf

I’d never heard of a Graf! I just had to google it. Mind blown!

    Water Volume and treatments

I found it hard to hit the right volume and gravity with BIAB at first. Make sure you keep copious notes and you will get there. It also helps to have a spare vessel with water at strike temp to do a dunk sparge with if you find yourself with low wort pre boil.

Have you ever considered going pro?

Thought about it. Not that I think I’m good enough but like other posters above I don’t want to take something I enjoy and turn it into a job. I also think it’s not so hard to make 5 gallons of good beer but scaling that up into a consistently good and commercially viable beer is a whole other...

Such a thing as too quick a fermentation?

I want to get myself one of those! If you hook it up with a Robobrew and an old fridge with a greenhouse heater lamp you’ll be able to control your fermentation temp and not worry about the hot weather.

    First beer, belgian tripel

I’m with Nosybear on this, it’s quite ambitious for a first brew because of the difficulties associated with fermenting high strength beers. My first couple of attempts at strong beers didn’t quite reach target gravity. That said what have you got to lose! Assuming you don’t have any aeration...

Such a thing as too quick a fermentation?

How did you generate this data? Are you using a Tilt or something similar?

    Odd Bin Brew

Another thing I’ve noticed having drank a few is the poor head retention cos of the lack of wheat. I know that’s nothing new or unsurprising but it makes a difference to experience it rather than just read about it.

    Odd Bin Brew

Ok it’s had time to condition and it’s not so bad. The yeast is by far the dominant smell and flavour, which is to be expected. I had no room in the fermentation chamber so it fermented with some big swings in temp as the weathers been nuts. Quite a lot of banana coming through. It’s drinkable...

    Odd Bin Brew

Finally got around to bottling this today. Not looking or tasting good at the moment. Hopefully a bit of carbonation will make it more palatable. Weirdly despite mashing at 68c it has hit an FG of 1011. It’s kind of dry and thin, which is the opposite of what I expected lol. The yeast is coming...

    Odd Bin Brew

I was shooting for 18 so I think a combination of low volume and good extraction. I have a new Grainfather and it’s only my second brew with it but the efficiency is fantastic. I didn’t top up in the end so it went in the fermenter at 1062 and has been bubbling away for a week now. I’ll let...

    Odd Bin Brew

I probably shouldn’t say this as an English man but I’m not a huge fan of English IPA. There I said it!

    Odd Bin Brew

Brew is in the fermenter. I’m a bit puzzled cos I have an OG of 1062. Volume in the fermenter is approximately 17litres but that would still mean an efficiency of 95% unless I’m totally misunderstanding that side of the recipe builder. Could it be the high mash temp? Debating whether to top up...

    Odd Bin Brew

    Odd Bin Brew

Thanks for the feedback guys! You’ve settled the big debate in my mind, which was whether to go hop forward or keep them in the background. I’m going keep the hops back with low bitterness and for better or worse let the yeast do the talking. A few other points, questions, responses: Hops - I...

    Odd Bin Brew

Cheers Megary - yeah I was thinking the same. I was hoping I had a pack of US-05 knocking around but alas no. I have brewed wheat beers with it before but not sure how it fares without wheat. I have nothing to lose through really so if nothing else it will be an interesting experiment. I...

    Odd Bin Brew

So with the long weekend coming up (UK) in lockdown, I'm keen to do a brew. However, my ingredients order isn't going to arrive in time, so I'm looking at the odds and sods I have knocking around and thinking I might as well throw something together. I have the following: 3kg Pale Malt 400g...
