    Water Chemistry

I send my (tap) water in yearly to Ward labs: https://www.wardlab.com/product/water-test-kit/ The 'W-501 Brewers Test + Kit' : Comes to (currently) $42 They send you the kit, you fill up the vial, and mail it back to them, they email you the results. What do you plan on using it for? I have something slightly larger and vertical I've used for aluminum sandcasting.

    Adjusting water

pH in your water, from what I've read, and experienced, is (relatively) meaningless: pH is a balance between acidity & alkalinity, not an amount. So, If you have two (equal weight) elephants on either side of the teeter-totter, and another one with two gerbils :They'd both have the same pH, but...

    Don't understand water chemistry calc

As someone (like all of us) that went from 'knowing nothing about how brewing water works' to... 'now knowing more than nothing' ;) : I was equally confused as Suga when I first started using the calculator : I didn't know enough about any of this to know what it should, or shouldn't do. I too...

Mash ph is consistently off: Is it me, or the calculator?

Just to follow up: Brewed again on past Sunday. I calibrated my pH meter right before I did my reading. Based on the BrewersFriend water additions vs my malt profile, it estimated my pH should have been 5.52; When measured, it was 5.26 : While not what the estimator reported, closer than in...

Mash ph is consistently off: Is it me, or the calculator?

Thanks @Yooper , find attached. I re-calibrated my meter last night: I was probably .2 points off from the solution, not good, drift for sure. Live and learn! :)

Mash ph is consistently off: Is it me, or the calculator?

Yah, I realize that everything changes :) It's just my results have been so far off literally every time. That being said, like above, I'll start pre-calibrating it before each new brew and see if it gives results closer to the calculator. Thanks everyone.

Mash ph is consistently off: Is it me, or the calculator?

Thanks everyone, some more info based on your questions: I calibrate every few months: Maybe I should do this before each brew. I chill the wort to room temp before reading (well, mid-70's, meter is calibrated to 68 I think) Water pH : I've been told this has no bearing on mash pH (John...

Mash ph is consistently off: Is it me, or the calculator?

I have: A calibrated pH meter (reads accurate vs their calibration solutions) Recent water report from Ward Labs Since I've gotten my pH meter and been tracking this, I'm finding that if I add the salts/acids that BF recommends, the final pH is never even close to what the calculator says...

    Bochet Braggot

I've made two braggots and a mead so far. I don't have a lot of comment on your recipe, but I can recount my experiences if they would be of any help ;) The first was a "Simple Hoppy Extract Braggot" from the book "Make Mead Like A Viking" (page 147)...
