Help with an ancient hop receipe

I do! And I have rhizomes from the plant so I can perhaps plant them if they are good :) I have about 70 grams or so left! And yeah I agree it's so fascinating to see these old relics in action! If its not too exiting I might look for other local plants and try to grow them. I will probably...

Help with an ancient hop receipe

Can be any of those really! I did use a whole pack (intended for ~ 23L) in a 10L batch. I was using my temp controlled fermenter for something else so I just left it to ferment at room temp, the temp seemed to stay in range but you never quite know. Thanks for the tips, this was my first...

Help with an ancient hop receipe

After a bit of lagering I believe the tart-green apple taste to be coming from acetaldehyde unfortunately. It's not that pleasant to drink.

    Brut IPA?

This is the snapshot of what I ended up brewing! It fermented to 0.999! I only kegged it yesterday but I had to sample it today and it's the best beer I have brewed so far I think. It's got a nice tropical-starfruit nose and it tastes dry and fruity, it's extremely refreshing and has a real...

    Grainfather mash-/spargewater

This is what I use for the grainfather, keep in mind tho, I haven't refined this very far yet, not a lot of brews with this equipment profile.

    Grainfather mash-/spargewater

Default equipment profile? Or just default mash thickness?

    Grainfather mash-/spargewater

Another user on the forum made this formula for calculating a good mash thickness for granfather: Thickness = 2.7 + (3.5/grains weight in kg) Then I use this in brewers friend mash water calculator: 2.7 + ( 3.5/ 4.2 ) = 3.53333 thickness Feel free to modify this formula to suit your needs...

Help with an ancient hop receipe

Sorry for hijacking your thread @Korpi how's your tests going? I just tried my test today, very early on for sure as the beer is about as cloudy as the autumn day I held it up against. But the hops I brewed with have an interesting green-apple-grape like aroma toward the white wine direction...

Conversion efficiency, before or after sparge water?

I just switched my recipe to Kettle instead and suddenly the numbers look a lot closer to reality! Big thanks for making me aware that it complicates things. Super, thanks! :)

Conversion efficiency, before or after sparge water?

Ahh that would make sense! Because I was very confused as to how I could have only 40% efficiency. Thanks! I suppose this means the total mash volume that goes into the efficiency calculation will in my case be (7,8+8,7)-Grain Absorb if I don't let brewers friend do it for me?

Conversion efficiency, before or after sparge water?

Hi everyone! I got a quick question, about conversion efficiency. I brew with a grainfather, and for a 10L batch you often have something like 7,8 L of mash water and then 8.7 L of sparge water. When calculating conversion efficiency, should the gravity be measured before or after the sparge...

Help with an ancient hop receipe

So I brewed a small 10L batch today with a super simple grain bill and some local hops my mom picked for me! (The ale & pilsner malt was just what I had left over to make it work, but I'd have gone for either.) I will let you know how it turned out :)

    Brut IPA?

Thanks 4Bentley! I don't have any Centennial but I do have a bit of Cascade, I altered the recipie and I will throw it into the boil at 60 mins. I feel like a small baseline bitterness is probably a good idea! Thanks again.

    Brut IPA?

Makes sense! I currently got it at 10~ % flaked corn and 10~% Flaked rice and hoping that will work out. (Also 5% wheat malt which I'm unsure of still)

    Brut IPA?

I might balance in some flaked rice and flaked corn with the wheat, I do like a good foamy head so I'd love to see how the wheat holds up thru the enzyme. Flaked corn is supposedly also a good thing for mouth feel and adds a tiny bit of flavour too.

    Brut IPA?

Awesome feedback! I will probably adjust with some flaked rice, and pull the wheat down, I'm kinda hoping to get a tiny bit of extra head retention from the wheat but maybe it's going to ruin more than it adds. Yeah I read that keeping the IBUs low is important and something most pro...

    Brut IPA?

I'm actually really excited to see where I can take this, I see most people using flaked rice/wheat but I'm curious to try and see how a bit of regular wheat malt holds up (but comparatively larger chunk of pilsner malt). I'm hoping to get a lot of hop aroma, I love whirlpooling hops, and with...

Help with an ancient hop receipe

I'm going to be trying out some more similar experiments with locally grown hops from Sweden (Which had similar laws to Finland). I don't have a chemical analysis of them sadly. So far I made one beer with them. It was a very simple ale, with pale ale malt and some wheat a tiny tiny bit of cara...
