How to change kettle size in equipment profile

Yes - if you are using it as your mash-tun... If you are only boiling in it then it's not as relevant as the other info. like @Josh Hughes mentioned. I can help more if you explain your set-up (ie. how you brew). Check out the video for Equipment Profiles - it may help. YOu can find more...

    Tough Brew Day!

I think I should - the question is: how long to mash the 1 pound of grain in the 1 gallon of water? Just as long as I would a regular mash? I've never done this test before... Wish I had a reason to make a starter ;) Or even a Speise! lol

    Base Malt comparison project

I love Munich Malt. I tend to use Type II dark Munich from Weyermann. What maltster did you use for each malt? I suppose I should try 2-row sometime... But I typically use - Dark Munich, Vienna, Pilsner and Golden Promise as my base malts. I've tried others (Marris Otter, Irish Pale Ale Malt and...

    Post primary dilemma

Oh no! It will just kick up a bit of fermentation again. I do this all the time with honey, maple syrup etc. In the case with honey and maple syrup they are simple sugars and the yeast eat it up completely and easily. It can dry the beer out and I no longer do it as often for this reason... But...

That's interesting - I love Vienna and enjoy Pilsner as well. I saw the video on the Vienna and if I remember right there may have been some yeast flavors at play...

    Post primary dilemma

You have a couple options - does it look like the wort started fermenting with wild yeast? If not you can reboil it for 10 minutes and mix in your PB2. If you'd rather not take the chance then just boil a bit of water and blend with the PB2 to add to the secondary... That's my 2 cents anyway :)

    Carbonation

105 sounds like a good starting point. Heck, it may even end being your go to number!

    Tough Brew Day!

Exactly! I do have a BYO membership and have read this and other articles. The malt sheet just doesn't quite match up to what I am reading... but I have managed to derive SOME info from it. Like what @Trialben mentioned - extract potential seems on par with other base malts. I think I will have...

    Tough Brew Day!

@Ward Chillington and @Trialben - Funny. For this particular grain I actually added it to my Inventory and used Weyermann's Analysis sheet to punch in my numbers. I had hoped that this would help in terms of accuracy for my recipes. I'll attach the Analysis sheet so you can see what I used. I...

    Tough Brew Day!

I bumped it to 1.040 with some honey. I should hit right around 4% abv. Which is fine. I would actually like a light summer crusher as everything I've brewed lately has been in the 5.5-6.5 range.

    Tough Brew Day!

Honey was from last year... Blueberry picking starts this month though! We have a good bit of wild low shrub in the yard and even a couple wild tall bushes! I planted three high shrubs 2 years ago and they are finally looking decent. Next year I think they'll yield a good bit. We go picking at...

    Tough Brew Day!

The crush looked good to me but I could be wrong... I guess I'll have to brew this recipe a couple more times - once paying attention to the crush, another with a longer mash, and one with a decoction! lol

    Tough Brew Day!

I should double check but I remember mashing in and thinking that the crush looked good. This is certainly something I can check though! It might make more sense than the need for a decoction - all the reading I've been doing does not lean towards the need for a decoction... I'll have to start...

    Tough Brew Day!

No kidding! I started with a protein rest and a slow rise to 152 - what I thought would hopefully be enough! But I guess not. The mash itself was probably 80 to 90 minutes. - I'm not mad anymore - just a bit puzzled. If the overall consensus is use a decoction for the floor malted bohemian then...

    Tough Brew Day!

Boy did I have a rough one! I brewed this morning but it did not go anywhere close to planned... Haven't had one of these days in a while! Long story short - I fell 12 points shy of my target OG - 1.036 instead of 1.048. less than 65% efficiency versus my usual 75-80%! There are only two things...

What are you doing with homebrew today?

I just crushed the grain for Herms Azacca Wheat Ale! @Herm_brews - I wish I could say I copied the recipe exactly but I just didn't have all the same ingredients... No 2 row - so I used Floor Malted Bohemian instead. - I have actually never used 2 or 6 row barley so I am not even sure how...

What are you doing with homebrew today?

That sucks! How'd the limey bastard go over btw? I assume it was for a party? Take any pics in the glass?

    Carbonation

Most kits and general advice state 5 oz for a 5 gallon batch but I always thought that was a bit too much carbonation... I'd probably try something between 110 - 120 grams on your next brew and then increase from there if you need more. Keep us posted on the results and your thoughts!

Tell me why I need to stock more than one bittering hop.

I have been finding myself doing the same thing! Lol. Sometimes I use something different for bittering but only if I'm using it later in the boil as well and it has a high enough alpha acid to compete with Magnum. For me it boils down to my desire to have as little hop matter left over in the...

    Base Malt comparison project

Sorry. I was just curious about Lutra vs Voss... I say crank out the beers! I'm curious to see what you make of the comparisons! I have done at least one of the aforementioned comparisons and am curious if yours lines up with what I found. (I'll say nothing until after reading your comparisons...
