Dry hopping questions from a beginner

    1) A minute in boiling water should be enough to sanitize a hop bag. 2) You get better extraction when throwing them in loose, as opposed to bagging them, but as long as you don't overpack the bag (remember hops expand quite a bit when wet) the difference wouldn't be too much.

Right. It also applies to I knew a guy who heard of a guy to who had an neighbor who had a cousin who <insert dumb action here> and he survived! :D

A bad way to check out!

And to that guy, it is now a fact that you only need two 3k lb straps to haul a 12k lb excavator!

    Any car people on here?

Same here but mine was an '86 Firebird. Not a Trans Am but a cool car none the less. Every time I'm on a winding road I still miss that car.

    Who do you cheer for?

Since the Packers played last Thursday, I had time to watch other games and I watched this game. It was definitely a good game to watch; even for a Bengal's fan.....until the fumbles that is.

    I brewed today!

Brewed Josh's "Smidicks" recipe today. I had to switch to Omega Irish Ale (OYL-005) yeast because my LHBS was out of Imperial Darkness (A10)...again. This tasted awesome the first time I brewed this so, I want this one to last a while so I am maxing out the brew kettle and fermenter. As I...

    Dry Malt extract

You can definitely do that. Brewer's Friend has a calculator for that. Were you thinking of doing two separate boils, one for the DME and one for the grain mash? If that's the case you would only need to boil the non-hopped wort just long enough to sanitize it. You could also mash thicker...

Is it essential to boil wort?

Just adding on to the other responses. The longer the boil, the more IBUs you get out of your hops. So if you change a recipe from a 60 minute boil to a 30 minute boil you would need to increase the amount bittering hops to compensate. I always do a 60 minute boil. While the wort is boiling...

    Y fitting for my regulator

Although a dual/triple-gauge regulator would be best, you could still make do with a multi-port manifold on the single regulator. You could shut off the line going to your serving keg, adjust the pressure, then turn on line going to your beer gun or another keg. It's a bit of a pain, but that...

What pH should I aim for ?

I don't have a pH meter. I just trust the recipe calculator is close enough and follow the advice John Palmer gave in the Dec 2020 issue of Brew Your Own magazine

Well, I didn't have to clean a bunch of beer cans off my deck this morning and yet your memory is still better than mine! :D

    Star San contamination

StarSan is flavorless in small amounts, hence their ad phrase: "Don't fear the foam", but I assume at some level it's going to affect the flavor of your beer. I just don't know if anyone has determined where the detection line is. But 4.1% (2 cups in 3 gallons) isn't that large a volume. So...

    Cleaning soda keg and fermentor

@Donoroto, were you the one who mentioned this in the meeting? If so, is this maybe-problem or a definite-problem?

    Cleaning soda keg and fermentor

I just built a keg washer and had the same problem. Next time I'll probably rinse with plain water and StarSan it the way @Minbari does.
